Coast Mountain Bus Company 3258-3282 were New Flyer Industries C40s built in 1995. These high-floor CNG models were purchased with the assistance of BC Gas who contributed $1.25 million ($50,000 per bus), reducing the final price tag of the project from $8.69 million to $7.44 million plus taxes[1]. This purchase was complete following the conversion of four diesel powered buses to run on compressed natural gas as part of a demonstration project back in 1990. They began service in November of 1995, however their lack of reliability saw them placed into storage in 2001. They were previously assigned to Port Coquitlam Transit Centre.
Between 2004-2006, they were reactivated with diesel engines, replacing the Detroit Diesel Series 50G engine. 3281 was the first to be recommissioned in September 2004 and assigned back to Port Coquitlam Transit Centre. They were re-allocated to North Vancouver Transit Centre in 2006 to replace the retired GM/MCI Classics, however some were returned back to Port Coquitlam Transit Centre.
While 3101-3199, 3201-3257 were unlikely to see service after 2010, these D40 models had been expected to be in service until 2015. With the pending expiration of their leases at the end of February 2011, the units were placed on sale in January of that year, which fell through.[2]. These buses were subsequently stored in Oakridge Transit Centre, starting in late March 2011, and are currently listed for sale once again[3]. Six units were sold to Southland Transportation in late 2011, while the rest were scrapped.
