History
The contract for the nine units was approved and awarded to DaimlerChrysler Commercial Buses North America Ltd (DCCBNA) on March 15, 2006 to expand the highway express fleet valued at $3,525,273.00 or $391,697.00 per unit. Delivery was originally intended for October 2007, though the majority were delivered in 2008 due to delays. They hold the distinction of being the last Orion V units to be built for a Canadian transit system.[1]
In 2009, passenger voice-announcement and display systems by INIT were introduced. CCTV cameras were installed in 2011. Compass Card readers were gradually installed starting in late 2012 through 2013.
Deployment
This series is entirely based out of Richmond and can be commonly found on the following suburban services:
- 352 Ocean Park
- 354 White Rock South/Bridgeport Station
- 601 South Delta/Bridgeport Station
- 602 Tsawwassen Heights/Bridgeport Station
- 603 Beach Grove/Bridgeport Station
- 604 English Bluff/Bridgeport Station
- 606 Ladner Ring
- 608 Ladner Ring
From time to time depending on operational requirements, these units can also be found on any conventional bus route operated by Richmond depot. They can also be occasionally found on other suburban routes that run with double-decker buses such as:
- 301 Newton Exchange/Brighouse Station
- 311 Scottsdale/Bridgeport Station
- 340 Scottsdale/22nd Street Station
- 351 White Rock Centre/Bridgeport Station
- 555 Port Mann Express
This series was ordered as part of a fleet expansion for suburban Highway 99 services connecting Downtown Vancouver and South of Fraser destinations. Initially, they were found exclusively on the following routes:
- 311 Scottsdale/Vancouver
- 351 Crescent Beach/Vancouver
- 352 Ocean Park/Vancouver
- 354 White Rock South/Vancouver
- 488 Garden City/Burrard Station
- 490 Steveston/Burrard Station
- 491 One Road/Burrard Station
- 492 Two Road/Burrard Station
- 496 Railway/Burrard Station
- 601 South Delta/Vancouver
- 602 Tsawwassen Heights/Vancouver
- 603 Beach Grove/Vancouver
- 604 English Bluff/Vancouver
- 606 Ladner Ring
- 608 Ladner Ring
Later, they also made their way onto other routes outside of Highway 99 services such as:
For a period of time in the early 2010s, they were usually running only on weekends/holidays or on weekdays on peak-hour "tripper" runs or on weekday runs that ran into the evening or late-night. This was simply because these were in limited numbers. However, they were the only suburban units fitted with CCTV cameras up until the procurement of Nova Bus LFS Suburbans in 2018 also played a factor in these being assigned on runs that would run into the evening.
Details
Unlike their 2001 counterparts, the blue stripe below the windows on both sides curves down into a straight line instead of curving slightly downward. They also have the same interior amenities as the 2001 units, such as reading lights and luggage racks. However, these are the only Orions in the fleet fitted with CCTV cameras and the padding on the seats is slightly less. The passenger windows are not tinted on unlike the 2001 units, but all have some tinted windows due to interchanging of window and glass pieces with 2001 units throughout the years during maintenance work. These are also the only coaches in the entire fleet to have a backlit run box.
Door panels on these are also different which feature a design with four window pieces, whereas 2001 models only had two window pieces. However, some units have mismatched doors or have been fitted with 2001 Orion doors due to the interchanging of door pieces throughout the years during maintenance work.
While these coaches primarily run on the highway, they are governed at 105 km/h, unlike their 2001 counterparts which has a maximum speed of 140 km/h.
