History
Ordered after a successful trial with two demonstrator units from November 2017 to March 2018, 27 units replaced retiring 2000–2001 Orion V units while five were for expansion. The first units were completed in late June 2019 and preparation for delivery began at Dynamic Specialty Vehicles in early August 2019.
They were first introduced on route 620 on October 30, 2019, followed by route 301 on November 13. On January 6, 2020, they were also introduced to the 555 Port Mann Express, coinciding with the transfer of route operations to Richmond and the launch of RapidBus. These units also started seeing service on the 351 on September 7, 2020, and on the 340 on September 9, 2021.
Following the 2019 XN40s, these are the second in the fleet to be delivered with TSI's Internet Protocol Slim Line Wedge CCTV cameras pre-installed, a departure from the analog TSI Color Dome and IR Sideview cameras that were pre-installed on units delivered since 2012. This is in part of the Camera Replacement Project that started with trials on select 2018 XN40 units. In addition to being CMBC's first double-decker units, these units are also the first to be equipped with USB charging outlets for passengers and second vehicle type equipped in the fleet, following the Burrard Chinook SeaBus[1].
These buses were delivered with Sportworks bike racks oriented incorrectly from the factory. The bike racks were oriented to have the front of the bike facing the curb on the outer rack instead of facing the driver's side, which is the standard for TransLink buses. This defect was remedied in the spring of 2020 when all bike racks were replaced with models in the correct orientation.
In October 2021, all 32 units had a modification made to the fuel filter with the installation of a fuel filter guard. The fuel filter's location adjacent to the tag axle made it susceptible to damage from debris caught and kicked up by the axle, leading to fuel spills. After two major fuel spills in 2021, Coast Mountain Bus Company together with Alexander Dennis – as the buses were still under warranty – designed and fabricated various fuel filter guard prototypes to test. In the end, the final design installed in all units was a metal bracket with a 45-degree angled bottom. This design was replicated on the second double-decker order and has been made standard on all future Alexander Dennis double-decker buses.
Beginning as early at late 2022 with unit 19404, the factory Cummins L9 engines began to be replaced with new engines of the same model due to high mileage. Most engine replacements began in 2024, with several units having their engines replaced that year.
Deployment
This series is entirely based out of Richmond and can be commonly found on the following six routes:
- 301 Newton Exchange/Richmond–Brighouse Station
- 311 Scottsdale/Bridgeport Station
- 340 Scottsdale/22nd Street Station
- 351 White Rock Centre/Bridgeport Station
- 555 Port Mann Express
- 620 Tsawwassen Ferry/Bridgeport Station
Details
Unlike other Enviro500 units built in North America, the engine exhaust outlet is located on the curbside instead of under the unit resulting in a few inches increase in length. As a result, the total length of the buses is 42.7 feet.
Along with the 2021 deckers, these are the only buses to be fitted with docking lights on the side of the bus which activate when turn signals are applied and when the doors open.
All seating is transverse seating with the exception of the seven fold-up seats in the front of the lower deck in the priority seating section. The upper deck seats 57, while the lower seats 30. Officially, the maximum capacity is 101 passengers. This was changed in August 2022 to 97 passengers. The change in passenger capacity was due to a recommendation from Alexander Dennis to allow for optimal performance based on overall vehicle weight and with tire pressure at 120 psi.
