This series entered service in September 1998 and were all based out of Port Coquitlam. As part of the expansion of CNG buses in the fleet, the fueling facilities at Port Coquitlam were upgraded by BC Gas.[1]
In their original configurations with Detroit DieselSeries 50G 275 horsepower engines and VoithD863.3 3-speed transmissions, these units suffered from cooling issues and multiple units experienced minor engine fires as a result. In 2001, 3288, 3292, 3302, and 3306–3308 were retrofitted with new Cummins WestportC Gas Plus engines. In 2005, 3290 was retrofitted with a new AllisonB400R 5-speed transmission with a 3rd generation controller.
As part of the first phase of TransLink's Test of the Power of Tomorrow scientific research on alternative fuel energy conducted in 2005 and 2006, units 3288, 3292, 3302, 3306, 3307, and 3308 participated in the program. Units 3292 and 3306 had their engines swapped to Cummins WestportC Gas Plus. They were wrapped in a red and zebra pattern and labelled "Every Alternative." Units 3288, 3302, 3307, and 3308 also had their engines swapped to Cummins WestportC Gas Plus. However, they also had hydrogen together with CNG. They were wrapped in a blue and zebra pattern and labelled "Hydrogen + Natural Gas." After the conclusion of the first phase, units 3292 and 3306 returned to their original livery. Units 3288, 3302, 3307, and 3308 remained through to the second phase and kept their blue and zebra liveries until they were decommissioned in 2011.
Beginning in April 2009, 19 units underwent conversion to diesel power at Cullen Diesel Power in Surrey. The CNG tanks were removed, diesel tanks installed in the traditional location, seating reconfigured to compensate for the resulting protrusions, and powertrains changed to Detroit DieselSeries 50 EGRs and AllisonB400R 5-speed transmissions with 4th generation controllers. 3290 did not receive a new B400R and retained its older transmission instead. The last conversion was completed by autumn 2009. Also in their original configuration, these buses were delivered with two-spoke steering wheels. Units 3288, 3292, 3302, and 3306–3308 were not converted and remained as CNG buses.
This series is the last CNG bus order to be delivered in BC Transit's Clean Air Bus livery. Units that underwent refurbishment were repainted to the sweep livery.
In 2009, passenger voice announcement and display systems by INIT were introduced. Compass Card readers were gradually installed starting in late 2012 and through 2013.
Originally, this entire series was based out of Port Coquitlam when they operated as CNG buses. In 2009 when most of these units underwent conversion to diesel, they began to resurface operating out of Richmond. For a brief period between September 2009 and early 2010, some units shuffled between Richmond and Surrey.
With the opening of Hamilton Transit Centre and as part of a system-wide fleet and resource shuffling, most remaining active units were transferred from Richmond to Hamilton.
For a brief period in 2017, unit 3303 cycled between various depots. Before the summer, it was allocated to Richmond. For most of the summer, it was sitting inside Vancouver and used for training until it began appearing in revenue service in August. It transferred to Surrey in October where it remained until December, when it transferred to Hamilton.
With the arrival of newer equipment and to replace aging units elsewhere, all remaining active units were transferred from Hamilton to Richmond in September 2018. Unit 3296 returned to Hamilton in February 2019 and was at that point one of two active units remaining (the other being 3287). It remained operating out of Hamilton until it retired in April 2019.
