This article is about the cancelled service between the UBC Botanical Gardens and Spanish Banks. For the current reiteration of the route renumbered from the C-series route numbering, see 42 Alma / Spanish Banks.
This was an east-west route connecting the University of British Columbia's botanical gardens within the University Endowment Lands with Spanish Banks in Vancouver. Service was provided Monday to Saturday with Sunday/Holiday services available from late June to early September.
Eastbound trips departed the UBC Botanical Gardens roundabout at SW Marine Drive & Stadium Road heading west on SW Marine Drive becoming NW Marine Drive, east on Chancellor Boulevard becoming W. 4th Avenue, south on Blanca Street, east on W. 10th Avenue, north on Alma Street, west on W. 4th Avenue, and north on NW Marine Drive to Spanish Banks Loop, located adjacent to the Spanish Banks Beach Park.
Westbound trips departed Spanish Banks heading east on NW Marine Drive becoming West 4th Avenue, south on Alma Street, west on W. 10th Avenue, north on Blanca Street, west on W. 4th Avenue becoming Chancellor Boulevard becoming NW Marine Drive to the UBC Botanical Hardens at SW Marine Drive & Stadium Road.
The last trip leaving Spanish Banks Loop returned to the yard running via regular route to Alma Street, then east on W. Broadway and south on Oak Street to Oak Street & W. 41st Avenue to Oakridge Transit Centre. An early morning trip running Monday–Saturday started at Granville Street & W. Broadway and went west on W. Broadway to Alma Street, then via regular route to Spanish Banks.[1][2]

History
May 1930 - Service introduced as Spanish Banks Bus, connecting Broadway & Alma with W. 4th Avenue & Blanca Street, with summer service extending to Spanish Banks
1950 - Route designated as 55 Spanish Banks and operated from 4th & Highbury to Spanish Banks
1952 - Service renumbered to 37 and operated from 4th & Alma to Spanish Banks
Mid-1950s - Service renumbered to 42
March 1986 - Service renamed to 42 Spanish Banks/Chancellor in both directions from 42 Spanish Banks and 44 UBC via Chancellor[3]
October 1993 - Sunday/holiday service proposed to be discontinued due to low ridership[4]
April 1994 - Sunday/holiday service discontinued and revised to run during the summer only[5]
October 2001 - Service discontinued due to funding shortfall and extremely low ridership. Portions of route replaced by a reroute of the 44 UBC/Waterfront Station[6]
