History
These units are CMBC's first Xcelsiors, the first units to feature frameless windows, the first local units with air conditioning, and the last buses delivered with air-powered doors. These units are also the only New Flyer Xcelsior units in the Coast Mountain Bus Company fleet to not be delivered in the "Charcoal" livery and instead in the grey Sweep Restyled livery. Unlike other Xcelsior units in the Coast Mountain Bus Company fleet, all passenger windows can be opened.
Compared to other units in the fleet, the stop request buttons are unusually large and not consistent with TransLink's policy of having stanchion-mounted buttons recessed in design to avoid accidental pressing.
When delivered, these units had a different style of exit door touch bars compared to other conventional buses in the CMBC fleet. Instead of mechanical touch bars, these units were fitted with electronic touch bars which were thinner and more sensitive. Instead of pushing the bar, passengers only had to touch the bar to open the doors. These were replaced with the traditional mechanical touch bars due to constant malfunction and damage due to misuse by passengers in October 2013.
This was the first order to be delivered with CCTV cameras pre-installed. Compass Card readers were partially pre-installed with the reader bracket. The full reader unit was installed in late 2013 on all units.
Unlike other batches, these buses have dual seats in the front instead of single seats between the priority section and the row in front of the wheelwell.
These are also the only Xcelsior buses in the CMBC fleet to be fitted with New Flyer's Driver Maneuver Awareness System (DMAS). DMAS provides the operator with visual feedback as to whether they are operating the bus within acceptable driving limits. The DMAS illuminates various LED colours to indicate driving parameters relating to acceleration, braking, and turning.
Between September and December 2016, units from this series along with the 14000-series XN40s received front modification work to retrofit the auxiliary air connection access from below the bus under the front road-side bumper to the front curbside on the body. This modification was to make access easier for mechanics to reach and to be consistent with the design used on newer New Flyer orders, particularly the 15000-series XDE60 coaches. A retrofit trial was done on unit 12012 in June 2016 and the design was replicated on these two series. The modification work required the rerouting of air connections and the installation of access ports just below the curbside headlight.
In August 2018, unit 12024 received a prototype RapidBus livery to test different colour pallets. The livery was removed after the trial and the bus was repainted into the "charcoal" livery, making it the only unit in this series to not be in the grey Sweep Restyled livery.
Starting in September 2019, driver barriers were installed with installation completed on all units in November 2019. Starting in mid-December 2019, the headlight assemblies on all units are gradually being upgraded to newer all-LED assemblies.
Deployment
This entire series is based out of Richmond Transit Centre and can be found on the 49 Metrotown Station/UBC. Depending on operational requirements, these coaches can also be occasionally found on the following routes:
- 351 White Rock Centre/Bridgeport Station
- 403 Bridgeport Station/Three Road
- 430 Metrotown Station/Brighouse Station
- 555 Port Mann Express
- 601 South Delta/Bridgeport Station
- 620 Tsawwassen Ferry/Bridgeport Station
Between September 2016 and September 2017, this entire series was based out of Vancouver Transit Centre when it assumed all operations of the 49 Metrotown Station/UBC. Due to space constraints in Vancouver to allow for service expansion to the 49 service, operations and all coaches in this series returned to Richmond.
