Brentwood Town Centre is a SkyTrain station in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Station Details

Usually referenced simply as Brentwood, Brentwood Town Centre is located at Lougheed Highway and Willingdon Avenue in Burnaby's Brentwood Town Centre. The station is located adjacent to Brentwood Town Centre/The Amazing Brentwood mall to the north and SOLO District to the west, in addition to other high-density residential developments along Lougheed Highway currently under construction. The station derives its name from both the mall and the 1960s suburban neighbourhood development north of the mall.

Brentwood Town Centre is the only station in the system to be located and elevated above the middle of a street (the station structure is built on the median of Lougheed Highway). This is also one of two stations where the concourse is not located on street level for an elevated station (the other is Gilmore). Because of this design, the station can be used as a pedestrian overpass over Lougheed Highway without entering the Fare Paid Zone. Work will take place soon ti rebuild the south entrance to add an elevator, employee washroom, and roofing.

The station is constructed with a mixture of steel, glass, and wood. Busby + Associates (now Perkins+Will Canada) designed the station and their work on Brentwood Town Centre Station was honoured in 2002 with the Governor General's Medal in Architecture. The station integrates steel and laminated timber into its structure with specially designed joints to connect the various pieces. The steel and wood "ribs" that make up the station structure were prefabricated by George Third & Son of Vancouver and were lifted piece by piece onto the guideway for installation.

History

The bus loop opened on September 28, 1989, as Brentwood Mall and was a meeting point for Burnaby and Tri-Cities suburban express services to/from Downtown Vancouver and local services. The exchange opened as part of the expansion of Brentwood Mall. Prior to 1989, there was no proper exchange and services had to load/unload on the street-side. Following the completion of the Millennium Line, many services were either cancelled or moved their western terminus to Lougheed Station. The bus loop was renamed to Brentwood Station to reflect the opening of the adjacent SkyTrain station, but the signage at Brentwood Station continued to display "Brentwood Mall" until its closure and demolition in December 2013 to make way for The Amazing Brentwood development. Services now load and unload along Lougheed Highway and Willingdon Avenue.

A walkway connected the bus loop with the SkyTrain station but closed on August 18, 2014, for demolition to make way for construction. A reconstructed pedestrian bridge connecting the main station structure and the mall reopened on November 7, 2019.

Station Upgrades

On March 9, 2022, TransLink announced the details on the south entrance reconstruction, which would see the introduction of an elevator, glass enclosure and roofing over the existing stairwell and the uncovered portions of the concourse area. The concourse will also be expanded to increase the number of fare gates from three to six. Two new escalators will also be installed, in addition to additional real-time passenger information displays, lighting improvements and public art. Work is expected to begin in March or April 2022 and is expected to last one year.

The construction work will result in the closure of the south entrance and the relocation of some buses. North entrance upgrades are expected to begin after the completion of the south entrance works. In total, the project overall is expected to take two years to complete.
