Coast Mountain Bus Company 3001-3021
Coast Mountain Bus Company 3001–3021 were a set of 21 New Flyer Industries D60 units built in 1991. These units were the first articulated units ordered as part of the first phase of BC Transit's "SuperBus" service, which saw the improvement of the 160 Vancouver/Port Coquitlam Centre service along the Barnet Highway corridor.[1]
In the summer before the SuperBus service was introduced, all 21 units formed a convoy and arrived at the PNE Park & Ride on June 7, 1991, for an official welcoming ceremony.[2] One of these units were also on display at the PNE in August 1991.
All units were wheelchair accessible with seating for 59 passengers. Seats were fitted with reading lights and featured state-of-the-art emission controls that met 1991 Canadian emissions standards. Most units were delivered with rollsigns, but three were fitted with Luminator's SuperMAX flip-dot destination signs, a first in the Vancouver fleet.
The original plan was to purchase 20 units, announced in September 1990 as part of BC Transit's $11-billion plan to boost transit service in the Lower Mainland.[3] This was part of an even more ambitious plan announced by then-Premier Bill Vander Zalm in August 1989, which would have seen the purchase of 84 units by 1991 to service a much larger SuperBus network, of which 40 would have served on Richmond–Delta–Vancouver routes. However, due to planning and logistical problems, the number of units to be purchased was reduced to 20.[4]
During a labour dispute between the bus operators' union and BC Transit regarding the lack of a guarantee that union members would be able to fill jobs when BC Transit's Greater Vancouver operations expanded into Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge and BC Transit not giving Port Coquitlam Transit Centre workers the agreed-upon four-day work week, operators refused to operate these units the day after they were introduced into revenue service.[5]
These units formerly operated under BC Transit with Vancouver Regional Transit System with the same numbers from 1996 until April 1999, when all Greater Vancouver operations split off into TransLink. From 1991–1996, these units were numbered 9001–9021 and were all renumbered sequentially.
3001, 3002, and 3021 were transferred to West Vancouver Municipal Transit and renumbered 912–914 in 2002. These units were repainted to the West Vancouver livery and fitted with West Vancouver branding and decals, including the coat of arms. They became the first articulated units to be operated by West Vancouver.
3003-3020 were used for one final time during the 2010 Olympics due to increased service demands.
