History
These are part of the first Nova Bus LFSe+ production order and will join an existing fleet of four short-range battery-electric units – two Nova Bus LFSe and two New Flyer XE40 buses – on the 100 22nd Street Station/Marpole service and will be allocated to Hamilton Transit Centre. These 15 units are the first long-range battery-electric units in the TransLink fleet. The approximate distance on one charge is 150 kilometres.
The order for these units was placed on January 26, 2021 for $16 million CAD[1] with delivery originally expected to be complete by Q2 2022.[2] However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and various shipping and logistic delays, the order was deferred and delayed to mid-2023[3] with the pilot bus scheduled to arrive in late 2022. As of early 2023, the remaining 14 units are expected to be in service by early 2024.
In November 2022, the pilot bus of the order arrived and underwent various pre-revenue service testing. During production, the pilot bus was numbered 22101. This was changed in January 2023 to 23201. This series is grouped under two productions: 23201 as LE13 manufactured in 2021 and 23202–23215 as LE14 manufactured in 2023.
This order is also the first to use American Seating InSight passenger seats instead of the 4ONE Aries seats standard on TransLink conventional buses. From May to June 2022, TransLink held a survey of which type of seats to use on this order. Samples of the American Seating InSight and the USSC Gemini were placed at the Lonsdale Quay SeaBus terminal. The decision to move away from the traditional 4ONE Aries seats was to address weight reduction on the battery-electric buses to improve overall performance. The decision was made by August that the InSight seat would be used after receiving 70 per cent of support from 680 respondents. While the LFSe+ will use the InSight seats, TransLink may explore the option of making the InSight standard on all future conventional bus orders.
Another difference in these units is the use of a new passenger information display. These units are fitted with Sunrise Systems' NXTPS signs as opposed to the legacy INIT passenger information display, which has since been discontinued by the manufacturer. These are also the first Nova Bus units in the fleet to feature the new-style frameless driver window. This window style has the driver's window shifted forward closer to the front and the blind spot window – a unique Nova Bus design – removed, resulting in improved visibility. Because of this change, the radio phone on these units is now located on the dashboard instead of next to the driver's window above the control console. Another change is these are the first Nova Bus units in the fleet to have all overhead switches labelled with text and symbols instead of just symbols alone. Another change in the driver's area is the use of a manual street-side side mirror instead of electric mirrors. The curbside mirror remains electronically controlled.
The pilot bus entered service on February 2, 2023, after a media event at 22nd Street Station and ran on an unscheduled preview trip on the 100 Marpole in the morning before entering in scheduled revenue service later in the afternoon. The bus features a revised "100% Electric Bus" wrap, a slightly modified design from the previous wrap used on the older battery-electric buses.
Throughout late April to late June 2023 on Saturday mornings, a combination of various battery-electric buses comprising of 19301, 19302, 19303, 19304, and 23201 made appearances on the 104 22nd Street Station on block 8/100, marking the first semi-regular appearances of battery-electric buses outside of route 100.
Starting October 4, 2023, coach 23201 began to be regularly scheduled on block 44/123 doing route 116 Edmonds Station/Metrotown Station on weekday afternoons and on block 12/106 doing route 106 New Westminster Station/Edmonds Station on weekday mornings starting October 6. These appearances ended in November 2023 as unit 23201 returned to running on route 100 exclusively once again.
Due to significant delays due to supply chain issues, particularly paint supplier issues that had to have eleven buses sent to the United States for livery painting, subsequent units only began to arrive in early 2024. 23204 was the first to arrive in February, followed by 23205 in May. Both underwent various pre-revenue service testing. The delivery of the remaining units was completed at the end of 2024, with all units having entered service in mid-January 2025.
Deployment
This entire series is based out of Hamilton, as it is the only depot with sufficient charging stations. These buses only run on the 100 Marpole/22nd Street Station route. However, on rare occasions, they may make appearances on other Hamilton-based routes on peak-hour trippers in the event of a bus shortage.
