99 Commercial–Broadway Station/UBC B-Line is a bus route operated by Coast Mountain Bus Company in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Route Details

This is an east-west express route running primarily along Broadway in Vancouver connecting the University of British Columbia, the Canada Line at Broadway–City Hall Station, and the Expo Line & Millennium Line at Commercial–Broadway Station. Service runs daily every 3–4 minutes during peak hours and every 5–6 minutes during off-peak hours. Year after year, the 99 B-Line has the highest ridership in the system and is the busiest bus route in Canada and the United States.[1]

Eastbound trips depart from the University of British Columbia heading south on Wesbrook Mall, east on University Boulevard becoming W. 10th Avenue, north on Alma Street, east on W. Broadway, north on Commercial Drive to Commercial–Broadway Station, where it terminates.

Westbound trips depart from Commercial–Broadway Station heading west on E. Broadway, south on Alma Street, west on W. 10th Avenue becoming University Boulevard, north on Wesbrook Mall to the University of British Columbia.

Eastbound trips returning to the yard run as 99 To Boundary and continue east on Broadway beyond Commercial–Broadway Station becoming Lougheed Highway, then north on Boundary Road to Boundary & Lougheed Highway. Westbound trips starting their runs begin at Boundary Loop and travel west on Lougheed Highway becoming E. Broadway and continues on the regular route to UBC.

The first and third westbound trips on weekday mornings run to Alma Street only.

History

The 99 B-Line branding when the route was first introduced in 1996. This branding was phased out over time.
  • September 1996 - Service introduced, travelling between Lougheed Mall and UBC running Monday–Saturday during the daytime only, with some trips short-turning at Broadway Station[2]
  • April 1997 - Operation transferred from Port Coquitlam Transit Centre to Burnaby Transit Centre
  • September 1998 - New New Flyer D60LF buses were introduced to replace New Flyer D60 and various standard 40-foot buses formerly servicing this route. Introduction of Sunday/holiday service and service extended to midnight, but all evening and Sunday service terminated at Brentwood Mall.[3] Introduction of bike racks on all buses and eastern terminus moved to inside Lougheed Mall Exchange[4]
  • September 1999 - All evening and Sunday trips extended to Lougheed Mall, with some peak hour trips operating along Winston Street and Government Street instead of Lougheed Highway
  • March 2000 - Millennium Line construction: route detoured off Lougheed Highway onto Winston, Government, and Austin to Lougheed Mall[5]
  • May 2000 - Millennium Line construction: routing revised to via Lougheed Highway, Rosser, Dawson, Beta, Lougheed then regular route to Lougheed Mall[6]
  • June 2000 - Millennium Line construction: temporary rerouting of detour routing revised to go via Lougheed, Bainbridge, Winston, then regular detour routing to Lougheed Mall due to the closure of Winston Slip[7]
  • July 2000 - Winston Slip reopened and detour routing revised to go via Lougheed, Winston, regular detour routing to Lougheed Mall
  • 2000 - Diversion in Burnaby area due to Millennium Line construction. Eastbound to Lougheed Mall via Gilmore, Dawson, Beta, Lougheed, Sperling, Winston, Government, Austin to Lougheed Mall; westbound to UBC via Austin, Government, Winston, Sperling, Lougheed back to regular route on Willingdon, Halifax and Rosser to Lougheed
  • September 2000 - Various service increases, mainly pertaining to peak hour service:
    • AM peak: Eastbound service between UBC and Broadway every 7 minutes between 7 and 7:30 a.m. Westbound service from Lougheed Mall to UBC increased from every 15 minutes to every 10 minutes between 8 and 9:30 a.m.
    • Westbound service from Broadway Station to UBC increased to every 5 minutes between 10 and 10:30 a.m.
    • PM peak hour service eastbound from UBC to Lougheed Mall increased from every 15 minutes to every 10 minutes between 4 and 5:30 p.m.
    • Late-night service between UBC and Broadway Station increased from every 30 minutes to every 15 minutes
  • December 10, 2001 - Midday service between Brentwood Mall and Lougheed Mall temporarily reduced from every 15 minutes to every 30 minutes to improve service reliability
  • April 2002 - Service reduction between Brentwood Mall and Lougheed Mall made on December 10, 2001, made permanent as significant changes to the service will be made anyway in late 2002 with the opening of the Millennium Line
  • September 2002 - Millennium Line bus integration:
    • Service between Lougheed Mall and Broadway Station discontinued
    • AM peak hour service increased from every 4.5 minutes to every 3.5 minutes
    • Midday weekday service increased from every 7.5 minutes to every 6 minutes
    • PM peak hour service increased from every 5 minutes to every 4 minutes
    • Nighttime service increased from every 15 minutes to every 12 minutes
  • September 2003 - 99S Special non-stop service introduced operating between Broadway Station and UBC (with one intermediate stop at Wesbrook Mall) during peak hours only in the peak direction,[8] running every 6 minute in the AM peak and every 10 minutes in the PM peak. Introduction of all-door boarding at Broadway Station and UBC Loop
  • December 2003 - Introduction of additional peak hour trippers when UBC is in session to address overcrowding
    • Two westbound AM trips from Main & Broadway and two westbound AM trips from Broadway Station
    • Three eastbound PM trips from UBC Loop to Broadway Station
  • September 2004 - Introduction of short-turn trips between UBC and Broadway & Main running in the peak direction to address overcrowding. Eastbound Main short-turn trips to operate as 99 Broadway To Main
  • December 2004 - Introduction of additional short-turn trips between UBC and Broadway & Main running in the peak direction to address overcrowding. Operations for Main Street short-turn trips transferred from Burnaby Transit Centre to Oakridge Transit Centre
  • September 2005 - Weekday midday service increased from every 5 minutes to every 4–5 minutes and weekday evening service increased from every 12 minutes to every 10 minutes
  • December 2005 - 99S Special discontinued and replaced with improved regular 99 B-Line service[9][10]
    • Peak hour service increased from every 4 minutes to every 2–3 minutes
    • Saturday midday service increased from every 12 minutes to every 10 minutes
  • April 2006 - Saturday midday service increased from every 10 minutes to every 8 minutes and Sunday/holiday midday service increased from every 12 minutes to every 10 minutes
  • June 2007 - All-door boarding introduced at all stops on articulated buses only initially as an eight-week pilot test, making the 99 B-Line the first all-door boarding route in the system[11]
  • September 2009 - Eastern terminus Broadway Station renamed to Commercial–Broadway Station
  • December 2009 - Two new stops added along the route: Arbutus Street and Fraser Street[12]
  • January 2022 - COVID-19 service adjustment: Saturday mid-morning to evening service reduced from every 5–6 minutes to every 6–8 minutes. Sunday/holiday mid-morning to evening service reduced from every 6–10 minutes to every 7–minutes, evening to late-night service reduced from every 8–12 minutes to every 12–15 minutes
  • April 2023 - Due to construction on University Boulevard, service revised to service all stops on University Boulevard in lieu of the 4 and 14
  • September 2023 - Express service returns to University Boulevard following the resumption of 4 and 14 services to UBC
