Coast Mountain Bus Company 7430–7446 were a set of 17 New Flyer Industries D40LF units built in 2001.
History
These were the second of two orders of Cummins ISC -powered New Flyer D40LFs for CMBC. Compared to their 2000 counterparts , they are the same in specifications except for the HVAC, which used a Thermo King R5 rooftop unit instead of the Sutrac AC31-HV rooftop unit found on all previous D40LF orders.
Starting in late 2009, the original equipment Cummins ISC engines were replaced with ISLs due to premature wear. Also in 2009, passenger voice-announcement and display systems by INIT were introduced. Compass Card readers were gradually installed starting in late 2012 and through 2013.
As part of the first phase of TransLink's Test of the Power of Tomorrow scientific research on alternative fuel energy conducted in 2005 and 2006, units 7430, 7437, 7439, and 7444 participated in the program. Units 7430 and 7437 were used as the controlled "base" to compare performance, cost-efficiency, and carbon footprint with other fuel sources. They were wrapped in a grey and zebra pattern and labelled "Baseline Diesel." Units 7439 and 7444 were powered by biodiesel. They were wrapped in an orange and zebra pattern and labelled "Biodiesel." During the program, these units spent time between Burnaby Transit Centre and Port Coquitlam Transit Centre .
Deployment
At their retirement, this series was based out of Vancouver Transit Centre and were found operating on any Vancouver diesel conventional bus route. Occasionally based on operational requirements, they were also found on trolleybus routes. From 2019 to 2024, a handful of units were used solely for training at the Vancouver Transit Centre.
When this series was first delivered, it was primarily based out of Burnaby Transit Centre . With the arrival of the 2009 Nova Bus LFS HEV units in 2009, buses in this series began to gradually transfer out of Burnaby and to Port Coquitlam Transit Centre to replace various aging coaches. By early 2010, all units were based out of Port Coquitlam.
The arrival of the 14000 series New Flyer XN40s began to displace the Port Coquitlam-based units. By early 2015 with the arrival of all 45 XN40 units, all units in this series were based in Richmond. This resulted in the decommissioning of various older series New Flyer D40LF units, primarily those from 1995 and 1996.
Starting in the summer of 2016, some units began to transfer to Surrey to replace various aging New Flyer D40LF units. While most units in this series remained in Richmond until their retirement, an additional wave of transfers to Surrey occurred in early 2017.
By April 2020, all units were retired or placed into storage. However, during this time, a handful of units were kept for use for training and some were used in revenue service on a contingency basis. With the "dieselization" of trolleybus route 9 in June 2020, some units returned to regular revenue service.
In April 2024 with the changes in vehicle type from 40-foot to primarily 60-foot articulated on route 25 , the remaining active revenue service coaches from this order – 7438, 7439, and 7443 – were made redundant and reverted to running primarily as training units and doing revenue service only on a contingency basis. Most of the units kept for training were gradually decommissioned in early 2024, with all units in this series fully decommissioned in the summer of 2024.
