404 Four Road/Brighouse Station is a bus route operated by Coast Mountain Bus Company in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
Route Details
This is an east-west route running in Richmond connecting the Riverport Entertainment Complex and Richmond–Brighouse Station, running primarily along No. 4 Road. Service runs daily every 30 minutes.
Eastbound trips depart from Richmond–Brighouse Station heading south on No. 3 Road, east on Granville Avenue, south on No. 4 Road, east on Steveston Highway merging onto Entertainment Boulevard to the Riverport Entertainment Complex.
Westbound trips depart from the Riverport Entertainment Complex heading west on Entertainment Boulevard merging onto Steveston Highway, north on No. 4 Road, west on Granville Avenue, north on No. 3 Road to Richmond–Brighouse Station.
During PM peak hours, southbound trips bypass the stop at Steveston Highway & Coppersmith Place.
Some early morning westbound trips start at Steveston Highway & No. 5 Road. The last westbound trips on weekdays and Sundays/holidays terminate at Steveston Highway & No. 5 Road.

History
- Originally operated from Ladner Exchange to Vancouver International Airport Domestic Terminal[1]
- 1958 - Service introduced as 64 No. 4 Road, replacing portions of the 74 No. 3–4 Road and connected Sexsmith Loop with Steveston Highway & No. 4 Road
- July 1961 - Midday weekday service revised to extend from Sexsmith Loop to Downtown Vancouver and ran as part of the 60 Richmond Express to eliminate the need to transfer between local Richmond routes and the number 60 bus. Service revised to be extended to Shell Road and revised to interline with the 61 No. 1 Road[2]
- July 1976 - Service extended from Sexsmith Loop west to Vancouver International Airport and south to Ladner Exchange, replacing portions of the 71 Airport
- September 1976 - Weekday service from 11am to 6pm temporarily revised to terminate at Sexsmith Loop instead of the airport due to traffic congestion[3]
- October 1976 - Regular airport service resumed[4]
- August 1977 - Route renumbered from 64 to 404. Routing revised to connect with Highway 99 express routes with the opening of Massey Exchange. Relocation of a central bus exchange in Richmond from Sexsmith Loop to Richmond Centre results in service being revised to serve Sexsmith Street instead of the Loop and route alteration to connect with other services at Richmond Centre[5]
- May 1984 - Destination sign simplification: Service renamed from 404 No. Four Road to 404 Four Airport/Richmond Exchange/Ladner Exchange[6]
- December 1991 - Accessible service introduced on select trips[7]
- July 1994 - Bike racks introduced as part of a one-year trial for trips operating between Vancouver Airport and Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal[8]
- April 1999 - Seasonal April–Labour Day extension from Ladner Exchange to Tsawwassen Ferry discontinued[9]
- June 2000 - Seasonal service to Tsawwassen Ferry re-introduced[10]
- September 2000 - Operations transferred from Oakridge Transit Centre to Richmond Transit Centre. Early morning service improved to provide service to the airport community for the 5:30 a.m. work start time
- January 2001 - Service rerouted into Airport Station following completion of construction work[11]
- April 2001 - Seasonal service to Tsawwassen Ferry discontinued due to low ridership.[12] Routing revised to go via No. 3 Road to use the Busway, discontinuing service along Cambie and Sexsmith. Introduction of earlier morning service to provide Ladner passengers early morning service to YVR. Alternating peak hour trips to/from Vancouver International Airport revised to terminate near No. 5 Road & Steveston Highway on Horseshoe Way, with evening and Sunday/holiday trips to/from Ladner Exchange terminating at Richmond Centre
- October 2001 - Northern terminus revised from Vancouver International Airport to Airport Station. The portion between Airport Station and Airport Terminal replaced by the 424 Airport Station/Airport[13][14]
- September 2004 - Shortened to Richmond Centre (Formerly Richmond Exchange) all days with the section between Airport Station and Richmond Centre replaced by the 301 Airport Station/Newton Exchange
- Summer 2009 - Ex-CNG New Flyer Industries C40LF buses service the route
- September 2009 - Day service increased and routing modified to bring it closer to Richmond–Brighouse Station
- October 2009 - Bus bays at Richmond–Brighouse Station reorganized; stop relocated from Bay 4[15]
- December 2010 - Peak hour service reduced to every 20 minutes
- October 27, 2014 - PM peak hour southbound trips revised to skip the stop at Steveston Highway & Coppersmith Place to address traffic and congestion concerns. This was initially a temporary measure and was also initially introduced for the 403 only on October 21
- December 2014 - Service to Ladner Exchange discontinued and re-routed to Riverport Entertainment Complex[16]
- May 2017 - Service proposed to be extended along No. 4 Road north on Granville Avenue to River Road and Bridgeport Station and south along Shell Road to the Riverside Industrial Area[17]
- April 2018 - Following public consultations, extension proposals revised to keep Richmond–Brighouse as the northern terminus and to carry through with revising the southern terminus from Riverport to the Riverside Industrial Area[18]
- May 2020 - Brighouse Station terminus revised from Cook Road & Buswell Street to No. 3 Road & Cook Road due to construction
- November 2020 - Completion of Brighouse Station Bus Mall results in terminus at No. 3 Road & Cook Road and layover at Park Road & Buswell Street being moved into Bus Mall and westbound routing revised to no longer take No. 3, Park, Buswell, Cook, No. 3, Park, to layover
