History
This series is the only diesel-powered third-generation LFS order in the Coast Mountain Bus Company fleet. They are fitted with Venturi exhaust tips to reduce exhaust heat emissions. Due to a fleet numbering error, there is no unit 9582.
When delivered, the interior dome lights were all white. Over time, the light covers were changed to blue to reduce glare at night. Along with the other TransLink Nova Bus units in 2009, these are among the only buses to be delivered with a two-tone stop request chime, as opposed to a single tone typically used on other TransLink buses. However, some units have had their chimes replaced with a single tone due to routine wear and tear.
This series is split into three different productions. The first group consisting of units 9543–9551 as part of production L532 and the second group consisting of units 9552–9573 as part of production L533. These two were manufactured at the Saint-Eustache, Quebec plant. The third group consisting of the remaining units are part of production L534 and were manufactured at the Plattsburgh, New York plant.
Some units were retrofitted with different cooling units. Coaches 9552–9557 were modified to be fitted with an EMP cooling unit and 9568–9573 with Modine eCooling units.
These units were among the first orders delivered with the passenger voice-announcement and display systems by INIT pre-installed. CCTV cameras were installed in 2011. Compass Card readers were gradually installed starting in late 2012 and through 2013.
Following a trial on unit 9755, all second and third-generation Nova Bus LFS units in the fleet received exterior front modifications. The modification involved drilling a rectangular hole and installing a maintenance access panel for easier wiper motor access. The work commenced in January 2016 and was completed by 2018 on all units. Due to this modification, the front fleet numbers on this series had to be repositioned from the middle to the driver's side.
In June 2022, units 9563, 9564, 9567 and 9576 were fitted with seven interior bike racks for service on the 900 Bike Bus between Bridgeport Station and the Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal. Capable of carrying a total of nine bikes (seven inside and two outside), these buses also carried a special Bike Bus vinyl wrap livery and had a capacity of 18 seated passengers with no standees allowed. These were also the only buses in the fleet to be designated as not wheelchair accessible due to their designation as a Bike Bus. Following the end of the Bike Bus trial period, these buses returned to regular revenue service with the interior bike racks removed, seats restored to their original configurations and special liveries removed. Units 9543-9546 were used for Bike Bus service in summer 2023.
After an initial trial on the 9726–9791 series Novas, hard barriers were installed replacing the "shower curtain" installed on all non-barrier buses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Installation work was done on this series in the summer of 2023.
Deployment
This series is entirely based out of Richmond Transit Centre and can be found on any conventional bus route operated by this depot. Since 2023, units 9543–9546 are the designated buses for the 900 Bike Bus, a seasonal summer service.
When first delivered, this series was entirely based out of Vancouver Transit Centre. With the arrival of the 2018 Nova Bus LFS HEV units in November 2018, this series began to transfer out to Richmond where it replaced aging New Flyer D40LF units.
