History

These were the first of two orders of Cummins ISC-powered New Flyer D40LFs for CMBC. Compared to previous orders of D40LFs, there were minor changes to the interior, primarily the changes in joints used on stanchions and interior dome light casings from opaque and side-facing to transparent and downward-facing. However, these were standardized default New Flyer design changes.

Starting in late 2009, the original equipment Cummins ISC engines were replaced with ISLs due to premature wear. Also in 2009, passenger voice-announcement and display systems by INIT were introduced. Compass Card readers were gradually installed starting in late 2012 and through 2013.

Deployment

At their retirement, this series was based out of Vancouver Transit Centre and were found operating on any Vancouver diesel conventional bus route. Occasionally based on operational requirements, they were also found on trolleybus routes. From 2019 to 2024, a handful of units were used solely for training at the Vancouver Transit Centre.

When this series was first delivered, it was primarily based out of Burnaby Transit Centre. With the arrival of the 2009 Nova Bus LFS HEV units in 2009, buses in this series began to gradually transfer out of Burnaby and to Richmond Transit Centre and Port Coquitlam Transit Centre to replace various aging coaches. By early 2010, most units were based out of Port Coquitlam while a handful of the lower-numbered units (primarily 7375–7390) were in Richmond. The fleet distribution would shift slightly and by 2013, only various lower-numbered units between 7380 to 7399 were in Richmond.

In 2006, some units were temporarily based out of Vancouver due to a fleet shortage caused by power-steering issues on the New Flyer E40LFR trolleybuses.

The arrival of the 14000 series New Flyer XN40s began to displace the Port Coquitlam-based units. By February 2015 with the arrival of all 45 XN40 units, all units in this series were based in Richmond. This resulted in the decommissioning of various older series New Flyer D40LF units, primarily those from 1995 and 1996.

During the summer of 2016, some units began to transfer out of Richmond with the arrival of the 2016 New Flyer XD40 units and to Surrey to replace various aging New Flyer D40LF units. In September 2016, units 7390–7399 also transferred out of Richmond and to the new Hamilton Transit Centre.

In September 2017, units 7403–7407 transferred to Vancouver, marking the first time Cummins-powered D40LFs were based out of that depot permanently. Within a year by September 2018, only 7404 remained in Vancouver as other units were moved to other depots. In February 2019, 7404 would transfer out marking the end of Cummins-powered D40LFs being based out of Vancouver Transit Centre until 2020.

By early 2020, most units were retired except unit 7426. However, during this time, a handful of units were kept for use for training and some were used in revenue service on a contingency basis. With the "dieselization" of trolleybus route 9 in June 2020, some units returned to regular revenue service.

In April 2024 with the changes in vehicle type from 40-foot to primarily 60-foot articulated on route 25, the remaining active revenue service coaches from this order – 7409, 7413, and 7419 – were made redundant and reverted to running primarily as training units and doing revenue service only on a contingency basis. Most of the units kept for training were gradually decommissioned in early 2024, with all units in this series fully decommissioned in the summer of 2024.
