Coast Mountain Bus Company 16101–16140 are a set of 40 New Flyer XD40 units built and delivered in 2016.

History

Unlike other Xcelsior units in the fleet, these buses do not feature full-length roof fairings.

Units 16101 and 16140 had prototype driver barriers installed. The model installed on 16101 became the standardized model used on all new bus orders and was retrofitted into trolleybuses and other Xcelsior buses in the fleet. All units were retrofitted with a driver barrier starting in late 2019.

To replace aging New Flyer D40LF units in West Vancouver, units 16131–16136 and 16138–16140 were transferred to West Vancouver Transit and renumbered to 1606–1614.

Starting in August 2020, the headlight assemblies on Coast Mountain Bus Company units were gradually upgraded to newer all-LED assemblies as found on 18001–18063 and later sets of Xcelsiors. West Vancouver Transit units followed suit starting in October 2021.

Deployment

This series is based out of Surrey and can be found on any conventional bus route operated by this depot.

All units were initially allocated to Richmond. However, to facilitate the retirement of aging West Vancouver Transit D40LF units, a handful were transferred beginning in December 2018 through February 2019. All transferred units were renumbered and branding decals were replaced. However, the lighter corporate blue remains in use on the exterior livery instead of West Vancouver's darker shade, and interior layouts were retained in the standard CMBC perimeter style seating in the rear passenger section instead of being altered to have the forward-facing seating layout standard on West Vancouver units. The CMBC exterior lighting configuration was also retained, with four turn signal repeaters per side instead of two.

In January 2021, units 16121–16130 and 16137 were transferred out of Richmond to Surrey. Unit 16127 remained in Richmond until April when it transferred to Surrey as well. These 11 units were transferred out to address service increases on various routes in Surrey. It also addressed the excess spare ratio in Richmond at the time, caused by various service reductions due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In June 2022, units 16121–16130 returned to Richmond following the transfer of 310 and 394 route operations from Surrey to Richmond. Unit 16137 remained in Surrey until early July when it also returned to Richmond. In September 2022 and January 2023, units began to shuffle again to Surrey as part of a reallocation of resources to support the increase of service on various routes. Another shuffle occurred in January 2024, with the return of most units that were originally allocated to Surrey in January 2021.

As part of a system-wide fleet shuffle in September 2024, the remaining 17 units in Richmond were transferred to Surrey.
