History

Delivery for this series began in December 2015, with the first 11 units entering service in February 2016 in Surrey for use on the 96 B-Line to replace the New Flyer D60LF units that previously ran on the line.

Compared to their earlier counterparts, these units feature the "Charcoal" paint scheme, which was seen in the earlier New Flyer LFR models. There are also minor interior aesthetic differences. These units are the first in the fleet to feature yellow stanchions at the back corner seats to aid in the event of a hard brake. Furthermore, these are the last hybrid units delivered with TransLink's hybrid decal on the front passenger windows. Starting with this order, single seats were installed between the priority section and the row in front of the middle wheel well, compared to the 12001–12025 series of XDE60s.

In mid-February 2016, strong fumes were detected in some of the earlier units in the series (15001–15012). This resulted in a delay for other units to enter service.

Driver barriers were installed in these units in 2019.

In December 2019, the headlight assemblies on all units were gradually upgraded to newer all-LED assemblies.

As part of a partnership between TransLink and Shaw, free Wi-Fi was installed starting in mid-2022, with installation on all units complete by late 2022.

Deployment

Currently, this series is spread between Surrey, Burnaby, and Richmond. They are most commonly found on the following routes:

Depending on operational requirements, they can also be found on routes R1 King George Blvd, R2 Marine Dr, and R5 Hastings St.

When this series was first delivered, the allocation of the fleet was as follows:

  • 15001–15011 in Surrey
  • 15012–15021 in Burnaby (15012 was originally planned to be with Surrey, but entered service in Burnaby)

Surrey units were dedicated to run on the 96 B-Line, while the Burnaby units ran on various express and articulated routes.

In September 2016 to support the introduction of all day, daily articulated bus service on the 49 Metrotown Station/UBC route, units 15019–15021 (along with the entire 12000 series) transferred to Vancouver. These units returned to Burnaby following the return of 49 operations to Richmond due to capacity restraints in Vancouver that limited service expansion on the 49.

From 2020 until 2023, Burnaby units commonly made weekday appearances on route 240 Lynn Valley.

Units began to transfer to Richmond in September 2020 and by January 2021, the latter half of this series was split between Burnaby and Richmond. By mid 2023, most Richmond units were reallocated to Burnaby. Surrey gained additional units in January 2024 to support the introduction of articulated bus service on the 323 128 Street.
