Route Details

This is a north-south express route connecting the University of British Columbia and Bridgeport Station in Richmond. Service runs every 20 minutes during peak hours only.

Northbound trips depart Bridgeport Station heading south on Great Canadian Way, east on Bridgeport Road to access the bus-only on-ramp onto Highway 99 heading north across the Oak Street Bridge, taking the SW Marine Drive exit heading west on SW Marine, north on Granville Street, west on W. 41st Avenue, west on SW Marine Drive, east on W. 16th Avenue, north on Wesbrook Mall to UBC Exchange.

Southbound trips depart UBC Exchange heading south on Wesbrook Mall, west on W. 16th Avenue, and south on SW Marine Drive. It continues eastbound on W. 41st Avenue, then south on Granville Street, east on SW Marine Drive, north on Hudson Street, east on W. 71st Avenue, south on Oak Street and across the Oak Street Bridge on Highway 99, then taking the Sea Island Way exit heading west on Sea Island, and north on Great Canadian Way to Bridgeport Station.

History

• September 1979 - Service introduced as Richmond–UBC, running mornings only from Richmond Centre to UBC via Oak Street Bridge with local service in Richmond and non-stop service in Vancouver
• September 1980 - Service reduced to two morning trips
• September 1981 - Service discontinued due to low ridership (the service change notes a discontinuation of route 480 Richmond–UBC despite a route number not being assigned in 1979 and 1980)
• September 1990 - Service re-introduced as 480 UBC/Steveston running during peak hours only when UBC was in session
• April 1999 - Limited summer service introduced on a trial basis with one trip in each direction
• September 2000 - Service revised to operate in both directions and year-round service made concrete and revised to operate between UBC and Richmond Centre, with service between Steveston and Richmond Centre discontinued. Operations transferred from Oakridge Transit Centre to Richmond Transit Centre. Outbound routing revised to go via 41st Avenue instead of Marine Drive to improve service reliability and for routing consistency. Trips entering service at Richmond Centre operated in-service as a 403 Richmond Centre. Introduction of all-day service
• April 2001 - AM peak hour westbound routing revised to go via the regular route to Alderbridge Way, then Garden City to Bridgeport Road to be consistent with other 480 trips after 8 a.m. instead of via:
  • Capstan Way between Garden City and Sexsmith
  • Sexmith Road between Capstan and Bridgeport
  • Bridgeport Road between Sexsmith and Garden City
• September 2002 - Peak hour service increased to every 20 minutes
• September 2003 - Introduction of overload trips during the AM peak when UBC is in session
• December 2003 - Introduction of overload trips during peak hours in the peak direction when UBC is in session to create double-header trips to address overcrowding
• December 2005 - Introduction of evening service
• August 2007 - Routing revised to operate along Lansdowne Road instead of Alderbridge Way providing service to Kwantlen College
• February 1–March 21, 2010 - Vancouver 2010 Olympic service: Service rerouted near UBC and rerouted off of Wesbrook Mall and 16th Avenue via NW Marine Drive, SW Marine Drive and Wesbrook Mall north of UBC Loop
• September 2010 - After 10 am on weekdays, every second trip revised to short-turn at Bridgeport Station instead of continuing to Brighouse Station
• April 2011 - Service between Bridgeport and Richmond–Brighouse stations discontinued due to low ridership and service duplication with the Canada Line. Discontinuation of No. 3 Road extension 480 To Steveston & Shell trips
• August 2014 - UBC terminus moved onto Wesbrook Mall due to UBC Aquatic Centre construction work and bus loop reconstruction
• June 2016 - Select stops removed west of Granville Street to improve consistency with the 43 Joyce Station/UBC
• May 2017 - Service proposed to be discontinued due to service duplication, declining ridership, poor on-time performance and incoming service improvements on the Canada Line and along the 41st Avenue corridor
• April 2018 - Proposal to discontinue service shelved after public consultations and opposition by UBC students. Service proposal instead revised to transition the 480 to a peak hour only service and to monitor ridership and frequency as other UBC services improve
• January 2020 - Service reduced to run during peak hours only as part of RapidBus program roll-out changes
• April 24, 2020 - Service suspended as part of cost-saving measures due to low ridership relating to the COVID-19 pandemic
• September 7, 2020 - Service revised to be suspended indefinitely due to impacts to ridership and travel patterns caused by COVID-19
