History

  • September 1997 - Service introduced to replace the 85 UBC and portions of the 286 North Vancouver/UBC[1]
  • September 1998 - Morning peak hour trips revised to start from Cordova Street & Granville Street going eastbound to accommodate articulated buses[2]
  • November 1999 - Route became wheelchair accessible[3]
  • October 2001 - Routing revised to take Chancellor Boulevard in both directions instead of going via Blanca Street and University Boulevard to replace portions of the 42 Spanish Banks/Chancellor and introduction of two-way service during peak hours instead of AM service to UBC and PM service to downtown[4]
  • April 2002 - Discontinuation of the last AM peak hour trip leaving Waterfront at 9:50 a.m. arriving UBC at 10:20 a.m. due to low ridership
  • September 2002 - Introduction of an additional westbound trip during AM peak hours leaving Waterfront at 9:05 a.m. to meet with 10 a.m. start times at UBC
  • September 2003 - Articulated buses introduced for all trips and introduction of midday service[5]
  • July 2005 - Service proposed to be upgraded to a B-Line, but plans were shelved due to potentially low midday ridership and marginal time savings compared to local services[6]
  • October 2006 - Downtown routing revised due to Canada Line construction to turn off Hastings Street onto Seymour instead of Granville; terminus moved from Cordova & Seymour to Seymour & Hastings[7]
  • September 2009 - Eastern terminus moved to Waterfront Station and routing revised[8]
  • August 2014 - UBC terminus moved onto Wesbrook Mall due to UBC Aquatic Centre construction work and bus loop reconstruction[9]
  • November 2015 - Express service in Downtown Vancouver proposed to improve speed and reliability[10]
  • June 2016 - UBC terminus moved from Wesbrook Mall onto Student Union Boulevard[11]
  • June 2018 - Express service introduced in Downtown Vancouver with the removal of five stops[12]
  • April 2019 - UBC terminus moved from Student Union Boulevard to inside UBC Exchange
  • June 2020 - Service suspended as part of cost-saving measures due to low ridership relating to the COVID-19 pandemic
  • September 2021 - COVID-19 service adjustment: Service reinstated after more than 14 months of suspension and off-peak service reduced from every 20 minutes to every 30 minutes. Last departures in both directions moved up by half an hour to an hour and all trips were revised to run with 40-foot buses. Four overload trips during the AM peak running with 60-foot articulated RapidBus units were introduced a day after the 44's reintroduction to address overcrowding
  • November 2021 - Introduction of select trips throughout the day running with 60-foot articulated buses
  • January 2022 - Discontinuation of the four overload trips during AM peak hours due to the introduction of select trips throughout the day using articulated buses in November 2021
  • March 30, 2023 - TransLink announces a restart of express service between West Vancouver and UBC starting September 2023 in the form of an extension of select peak hour trips to West Vancouver to replace the 258 UBC/West Vancouver service[13]
  • September 2023 - Introduction of a limited peak hour extension to West Vancouver as part of a reintroduction of a one-seat ride between West Vancouver and UBC previously provided by the 258
  • April 2024 - Operations reallocation: All-day blocks revised to be operated by Vancouver Transit Centre, with peak-hour trippers remaining under Burnaby Transit Centre operations
