22 Knight/Downtown TransLink Accessible bullet-b.png is a bus route operated by Coast Mountain Bus Company in Metro Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Route Details

This is a north-south route connecting South Vancouver and Downtown Vancouver running primarily on Knight Street. It is a Frequent Transit Network (FTN) route with service 15 minutes or better for 15 hours or more, seven days a week.

Northbound trips depart from its terminus underneath the Knight Street Bridge heading north on Knight Street becoming Clark Drive, west on Venables Street becoming Prior Street, north on Gore Avenue, west on E. Pender Street, south on Burrard Street, and west on Dunsmuir Street becoming Melville Street to Burrard Station.

Southbound trips depart from Burrard Station heading west on Melville Street, north on Thurlow Street, east on W. Pender Street, south on Gore Avenue, east on Prior Street becoming Venables Street, south on Clark Drive becoming Knight Street to its terminus underneath the Knight Street Bridge.

During peak hours, select trips bypass Venables Street and go via Main Street and Terminal Avenue between Clark Drive & E. 1st Avenue and E. Pender Street & Main Street. Of these trips, one southbound trip runs only in the morning. There are six northbound trips, of which four are in the morning and two in the afternoon.

Select southbound trips short-turn at Knight Street & E. 63rd Avenue. These trips are for buses ending their shifts and returning to Vancouver Transit Centre.

Two southbound trips on weekdays, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, operate as 22 Knight via Industrial and extend across the Fraser River into Richmond. These trips start from E. Pender Street & Main Street and go via regular route, Knight Street crossing over the Knight Street Bridge, east on Bridgeport Road, south on Viking Way, west on Cambie Road, north on Jacombs Road to Jacombs & Rowan Place, then return as 22 Downtown heading north on Jacombs Road, west on Bathgate Way, north on Sweden Way, east on Bridgeport Road, north on Knight Street crossing the Knight Street Bridge, then regular route.

Points of Interest

History

  • Formerly single route with two branches 22 Macdonald–16th Avenue/Downtown and 22 Knight/Macdonald before introduction of route 2 Macdonald–16th Avenue/Burrard Station[1]
  • January 1976 - Service renumbered to 22 in both directions as part of a route number pilot project; service previously operated as 22 Knight and 23 Macdonald[2]
  • January 1980 - Pender–Keefer Diversion closure: Routing revised in Chinatown to take Pender Street in both directions following changes to make Pender a two-way street[3]
  • April 1981 - Westbound routing in downtown revised to go via Pender and Burrard instead of Pender, Cambie, Dunsmuir, and Burrard. 16th Avenue short-turn service's downtown terminus revised from Cambie & Dunsmuir to Carrall & Keefer[4]
  • March 1982 - Limited Richmond service introduced as 22 Knight displaying No. 6 Road & Westminster on the auxiliary holder[5]
  • May 1984 - Destination sign simplification: 22 Knight–Macdonald renamed to 22 Knight/Macdonald and trips via Terminal Avenue as 22 via Terminal; 22 Macdonald–16th Avenue trips renamed to 22 Macdonald–16th Avenue/Downtown[6]
  • May 1986 - 22 Downtown/Macdonald–16th Avenue downtown terminus relocated to Beatty & Dunsmuir and service temporarily discontinued on Pender Street between Cambie and Columbia due to Expo 86[7]
  • October 1986 - Sunday/holiday service discontinued and downtown terminus of the 22 Downtown/Macdonald–16th Avenue reverted to Carrall & Pender following the end of Expo 86[8]
  • October 1990 - Accessible service introduced[9]
  • July 1992 - Stop introduced at Cornwall & Cypress on the 22 Macdonald Express[10]
  • April 1995 - Downtown short-turn service terminus revised to Keefer Street & Columbia Street instead of Carrall Street & Keefer Street due to Carrall Street becoming a one-way southbound street; routing revised to continue west on Keefer Street from new terminus to Abbott Street then via Abbott, Pender and regular Macdonald–16th Avenue routing[11]
  • June 1997 - Short-turn service trips to downtown and to 16th Avenue at Macdonald are renumbered as 2 Yaletown/Downtown/Macdonald–16th Avenue[12]
  • September 2002 - Discontinuation of the 22 Macdonald Express and Knight-bound summer (May–September) Friday evening routing via Main Street and Georgia Street[13][14]
  • July 2005 - Service proposed to extend to Dunbar Loop from 41st & Carnarvon due to concerns from residents regarding buses on Carnarvon Street and 39th Avenue and to improve connections with other services. The proposal also looked into extending the route to Kerrisdale but was undesirable due to traffic congestion and lack of places to turn around[15]
  • July 6–10, 2005 - Introduction of a temporary express shuttle service running between Waterfront Station and the Sea Vancouver Festival at W. 4th Avenue & Macdonald Street every 8 minutes. AM service ran as a counterclockwise route and PM service ran as a clockwise route running along the regular 22 routing. Service was operated out of Burnaby using D60LF units. Stops were:
    • Northbound: Local service from 4th & Macdonald to Burrard Bridge, then Burrard/Harwood, Robson, Georgia, Burrard Station, Waterfront Station
    • Southbound: Waterfront Station, Burrard Station, Burrard/Georgia, Robson, Harwood, then local service to 4th & Macdonald
  • April 2006 - Service extended to Dunbar Loop from 41st Avenue & Carnarvon Street; service on Carnarvon Street and 39th Avenue discontinued[16]
  • April 2008 - Second eastbound trip via Trutch on weekday mornings revised to start at Dunbar Loop instead of 16th & Trutch
  • September 2009 - Discontinuation of westbound trips that ran as 2 Macdonald–16th Avenue from Pender & Abbott during AM peak hours
  • June 2016 - Route revised to operate only between downtown and Knight Street terminus due to the Burrard Corridor Upgrades;[17] service between Dunbar Loop and Burrard Station taken over by 2 – initially as a temporary measure. Discontinuation of service to Dunbar Loop also results in the discontinuation of trips via Trutch
  • January 2022 - AM peak hour southbound Terminal Avenue service reduced from two trips to one trip. COVID-19 service adjustments result in weekday midday service reduced from every 12 minutes to every 15 minutes

22 Macdonald Express

Until September 2002, there was a peak-hour express component to the 22. During AM peak hours, express buses ran from 41st Avenue & Carnarvon to Downtown Vancouver and during PM peak hours, express buses ran from Downtown Vancouver to 41st & Carnarvon. This operation arrangement applied to all 22 trips during peak hours, with the 2 providing local service along Cornwall Avenue.

Towards downtown, trips ran as a local service until Macdonald & Broadway. From here, stops were made only at Macdonald & 4th and Cornwall & Yew and Cornwall & Cypress, before continuing into downtown stopping at all stops and then resuming the regular 22 Knight routing.

Towards Macdonald, trips ran as a local service until Burrard & Pacific. From here, stops were made only at Cornwall & Cypress, Cornwall & Yew, Macdonald & 4th, and Macdonald & Broadway, before resuming the regular 22 Macdonald routing stopping at all stops.

June 2016 Service Change

Prior to the June 2016 service changes, the 22 ran as 22 Knight/Macdonald, travelling from the Knight Street terminus to Dunbar Loop via Burrard Station. From Burrard Station to Macdonald Street & W. 16th Avenue, the 22 ran in tandem with the 2 Macdonald–16th Avenue/Burrard Station and shared the same stops and routing. This operation arrangement was due to the fact that a significant portion of the 2 is actually a former branch of the 22, as prior to the June 1997 service change there was a 22 Macdonald–16th Avenue service.

Due to the Burrard Corridor Rehabilitation Project, which involved extensive work on the Burrard Street Bridge, it was decided that the 22 would be shortened to Burrard Station and run instead as 22 Knight/Downtown. The 2 would replace the portion of the 22 between Burrard Station and Dunbar Loop. This was done to ensure a consistent operation and minimal delays to the 22. The 2 absorbed the 22's schedules, resources and frequencies that were required to run the service between Burrard Station and Dunbar Loop, which did not affect the service or frequency on the 22 between Burrard Station and the Knight Street terminus.

This change when initially announced was to be a temporary measure until the completion of the Burrard Corridor Rehabilitation project. It has since become a permanent change as no updates were given when construction work was complete on the future state of the 2 and 22 routes.
