North Division is one of four YRT operational divisions. This division covers the towns of Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Georgina, King and Newmarket, with some services extending into Richmond Hill, Toronto and Vaughan.
North Division is operated under contract by TOK Transit.
History
North Division initially comprised the former operations of Newmarket Transit, which was contracted to Laidlaw Transportation (which was later acquired by First Student Canada). Service was operated out of a contractor-owned property at Mulock Drive and Kent Drive.
The contract with First Student was terminated on January 16, 2012, after 85 days of prolonged labour action.[1] A new contract was awarded to TOK Transit Ltd., who obtained the contract on January 26, 2012. At this time, operations were shifted to the region-owned facility on Yonge Street north of Aspenwood Drive, which was previously used by BRT division.
A new 7-year operations contract for the consolidated West-North Division was awarded to TOK Transit, effective May 1, 2021.[2] This contract administratively merged the North Division with Southwest Division. While buses and routes continue to be operated out of their original locations, staff and support vehicles may be shared between both lcoations.
