Historic Branches

History

AG300 #201 on route 90.
XD40 #1407 on route 90.

Pre-YRT, service on Leslie Street only existed outside of peak periods south of Green Lane (Markham Transit route 3), and during peak periods up to Highway 7 (TTC route 25D). Service on Elgin Mills Road was provided in small sections by Richmond Hill Transit routes 1A, 1C, 2 and 8.

  • September 3, 2002 - New route introduced providing service between Seneca College King Campus and Seneca College Newnham Campus via Bathurst Street, Elgin Mills Road, and Leslie Street. Peak-period service will operate between the two campuses while off-peak service will operate between the Elgin West Community Centre at Bathurst and Shaftsbury, and Beaver Creek at Highway 7 and Leslie Street.
  • November 24, 2002 - Peak period service was extended to Don Mills Station with the opening of the Sheppard subway. Southbound buses used Highway 404 from Highway 7 to Finch Avenue East and northbound buses used Don Mills Road/Leslie Street. A TTC map error shows route 90 following The Peanut in the incorrect direction, something that had still not been fixed until 2008.
  • September 5, 2004 - Southbound buses had stopped using Highway 404 to get to Don Mills Station, utilizing Don Mills Road in both directions. The routing near Seneca King was adjusted to service King Road and Dufferin Street instead of Bathurst Street and 15th Sideroad.
  • September 3, 2006 - Route 90 (along with routes 91 Bayview and 99 Yonge C) had a 'South' suffix added to their names to better promote the area of the region it served, and so passengers would not get confused with similarly-named routes operating in Newmarket (58 Leslie North, 54 Bayview North and 98 Yonge North, respectively).
  • March 2008 - 6-day service to Don Mills Station started in March 2008.
  • May 2008 - Service to Seneca King was removed.
  • April 26, 2009 - Sunday and Holiday service introduced south of Steeles Avenue East to Don Mills Station. Buses do not serve Seneca College Newnham Campus on Sundays and Holidays.
  • June 28, 2009 - As a result of delays due to traffic at Seneca College Newnham Campus, all southbound trips after 12:35pm on weekdays and Saturdays will operate direct to Don Mills Station. Northbound trips continue to serve the campus.
  • September 6, 2009 - All Sunday/Holiday trips were removed from the Seneca College Loop both directions along with all southbound trips on Saturdays.
  • December 20, 2009 - All service diverting to Seneca College Newnham Campus and The Shops on Steeles and 404 is removed in order to reduce delays and improve travel times. Buses now operate direct on Don Mills Road.
  • May 10, 2010 - A new branch, route 90B, was created to replace route 25D north of Don Mills Station. Signs were initially shown as route 90B being "formally 25D", which were removed on June 18, 2010 once riders were adapted to the service change.
  • September 5, 2010 - To prevent confusion, the 'South' suffix was removed from route signs.
  • February 2012 - Route 90 was declared fully accessible.
  • December 2012 - Route 90B was declared fully accessible.
  • June 30, 2013 - As part of the 2013 Annual Service Plan, weekday service after 8:00pm on branch 90B is discontinued. Also, route 90 service along Elgin Mills Road was replaced by the new route 80, and as a result, all trips now terminate at Richmond Green Secondary School.
  • April 21, 2014 - Elimination of weekday midday service on route 90B.
  • July 1, 2018 - In response to overcrowding issues, articulated buses began operating on route 90/90B. Operations were transferred to BRT Division, as the Southeast garage could not accommodate articulated buses.
  • June 30, 2024 - Service is removed from Richmond Green Secondary School, and northern terminus of route 90 revised to an on-street loop via John Birchall Road.

Vehicles

Route 90 is primarily a 60ft route, and uses articulated New Flyer XD60. Branch 90B uses a mix of articulated 60ft buses and standard 40ft buses, such as New Flyer D40LF, D40LFR, XD40, or Nova Bus LFS may be used.
