History
Service was contracted to the Toronto Transit Commission by Vaughan Transit. This involved TTC operating the buses and collecting the fares but Vaughan Transit paying for any losses in running the service. A TTC fare was required for passengers travelling south of Steeles Avenue West, but only a Vaughan fare was required if the entire trip was north of Steeles Avenue. When Vaughan Transit was acquired by York Region Transit, the contract was picked up as well with similar conditions.
This route originated on November 22, 1980 when buses on the 7 Bathurst (Wilson Station-Steeles) branch were extended north of Steeles via Bathurst, to a new off-street loop at Arnold Avenue operated Mondays through Saturdays until around 6 p.m. Buses on this branch ran with window-cards that read “Arnold Ave". On June 26, 1983, this branch was redesignated as 7G, with buses were extended up north on Bathurst to loop via east on Highway 7B (Centre Street), south on Atkinson and west on Clark back to Bathurst. Sunday service was added on July 26, 1987 as the 7G buses changed its northern terminus to loop east and south on Atkinson and west on Clark. Midday service was added on February 8, 1988.
The 7G branch was split off as the 160 Bathurst North on September 4, 1990.
Since September 5, 1996, route 160 has operated to its current terminus. It looped north and east on New Westminster Drive, east and south on Atkinson Avenue, and west on Clark Avenue, similar to its current loop. By 1998, the loop had expanded to its current one, and now operated through Promenade Terminal. Service has remained fairly constant ever since. Late evening service was eliminated on February 14, 1999.
Route 160 was declared fully accessible in February 2012.
