History
On October 14, 2001, new service is introduced to the Pine Valley Drive and Highway 7 area as an extension of TTC route 37. Service was contracted out to the TTC by YRT and was given the branch 37D. This involved the TTC operating the buses and collecting the fares but YRT paying for any losses in running the service. The fare-zone boundary, established at Pine Valley Drive and Steeles Avenue West, required an extra TTC fare for passengers traveling south of Steeles Avenue West. If the entire trip was north of Steeles, only a YRT fare was required.
At the time, route 37D was one of two routes (the other being route 102D) YRT contracted out to the TTC. All other TTC routes operating north of Steeles (excluding 53B/E and buses looping in off-street loops north of Steeles) had pre-existing contracts inherited from Vaughan and Markham Transit.
Vaughan Transit route 6 provided service along a similar route before amalgamation. Buses started at Islington Loop west of Pine Valley Drive, and followed Strada Drive, Rowntree Dairy Road, Whitmore Road, Ansley Grove Road, and Langstaff Road to loop at an off-street loop at Weston Road and Langstaff Road. When YRT took over operations from Vaughan Transit in 2001, it decided to reconfigure operations in Woodbridge. When route 37D was introduced, route 6 headed further up Pine Valley Drive to Highway 7, and east to Ansley Grove Road where it continued its route. As a result, operations south of Highway 7 were contracted out to the TTC where buses operated over the former route 6. Buses looped via Whitmore Road and Winges Road to terminate at Rowntree Dairy Road. Service has remained the same ever since.
YRT's route 6 no longer operates; both the Pine Valley Drive, Highway 7, and Ansley Grove Road sections of the route were covered by YRT routes 12, 77, and 10, respectively. The Langstaff Road portion was later covered by an extension of route 12.
Initially introduced as peak-period only service, weekday midday service was added on May 12, 2002.
Route 37D was declared fully accessible in December 2012.
Route 37D was discontinued on June 24, 2013 due to a low revenue-cost ratio. The last day of service was June 21, 2013.
Vehicles
Route 37D was a 40ft route from TTC Arrow Rd. Division and used Orion VII/NG HEV buses. Occasionally, Nova Bus RTS buses were also used.
