Route Details
Route 56 serves Eagle Street, Gorham Street, and Harry Walker Parkway.
This route serves the Glenway Estates, Central Newmarket, Gorham-College Manor, and the Newmarket Industrial Park communities. It also serves Upper Canada Mall, Ray Twinney Recreation Complex, Regional Headquarters, and Newmarket Community Arena. One trip in the morning and one in the afternoon also serve Sacred Heart Catholic High School.
Route 56 connects to Viva Blue at Newmarket Terminal and at Yonge Street.

Historical Branches
History
Route 56 was operating along its present arrangement when YRT inherited Newmarket Transit in 2001. It had a different number with Newmarket Transit, however. From 2001 to 2002, it operated as a separate branch of 55 as 55B.
- May 12, 2002 - New two-way service introduced on Sundays. Service extended north via Harry Walker Parkway to Ringwell Drive during the daytime on weekdays and Saturdays. All evening and Sunday service terminates at 404 Town Centre only.
- September 3, 2002 - Route is given it's own number and is changed from 55B to 56.
- June 26, 2005 - When route 520/521 was introduced, running along Gorham and Eagle, frequency on 56 was reduced to weekday rush-hour service only.
- November 20, 2005 - Late evening and weekend service was reinstated.
- April 26, 2009 - New limited service introduced on Alexander Road, Srigley Street, and Carlson Drive to serve students attending Sacred Heart Catholic High School. One morning and one afternoon trip operate this diversion.
- December 2012 - Route 56 was declared fully accessible.
- April 20, 2014 - As proposed in the 2014 Annual Service Plan, all service after 9:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays/Holidays is discontinued. Also, eastbound buses departing the Newmarket GO Bus Terminal exit onto Eagle Street instead of Davis Drive.
- June 26, 2016 - Weekend and Holiday evening service is converted to Dial-a-Ride operating between 7:00pm and 9:15pm.
- November 6, 2016 - Service during weekday evenings is converted from conventional transit to Dial-a-Ride service operating from 7:00pm to 10:45pm.
- April 5, 2020 - Due to low ridership, service on Sundays and Holidays before 11am was discontinued.
- September 6, 2020 - Route is reduced to operate during rush hours only with all weekday off-peak and weekend service discontinued and replaced with MOR Gorham-Eagle.
- September 4, 2022 - Due to the elimination of MOR Gorham-Eagle, all on-request service during off-peak hours are now provided by the new MOR Newmarket service.
