History

TTC Operations

Service along Dufferin Street was originally contracted out to the Toronto Transit Commission by Vaughan Transit. This involved TTC operating the buses and collecting the fares, but Vaughan Transit paying for any losses in running the service. A TTC fare was required for passengers traveling south of Steeles Avenue, but only a Vaughan fare was required if the entire trip was north of Steeles Avenue. When Vaughan Transit was acquired by York Region Transit, the contract was picked up as well, with similar conditions.

Route 105 Wilson Heights first started operating from Wilson Station when the Spadina Subway first opened to Wilson Station. In 1980, it was extended north of Steeles to Glen Shields Avenue as route 105A. Peak and midday service was offered at this time. Saturday and evening service was added in 1984 and 1987 respectively, while Sunday service was not implemented until 2001.

In 1992, the northern terminus was extended to an off-street loop at Highway 7. 4 years later, the southern terminus was moved to the newly opened Downsview Station.

The route name was changed to 105 Dufferin North in 2000, because this route mostly served Dufferin Street instead of Wilson Heights Boulevard. It was also extended north to a large on-street loop at Rutherford Road.

Late evening service was added in 2002, making route 105 the first TTC route operating north of Steeles Avenue to have all-day everyday service.

In April 2008, branch 105B was added. It is a rush-hour branch extending 105's looping north through newly built neighbourhoods to Major Mackenzie Drive. Service alternated between routes 105 and 105B during rush hours.

Routes 105 and 105B were declared fully accessible in February 2012.

Routes 105 was rebranched to routes 105A and 105D on June 22, 2014 as part of an initiative by the TTC to make branch destination information more clear and consistent for customers.

YRT Operations

  • December 17, 2017 - With the opening of the Line 1 subway extension to Vaughan, TTC service north of Steeles Avenue was eliminated, and YRT began operating the route as 105 Dufferin. YRT buses operate along the same routing to Sheppard West Station, but may only drop off passengers southbound and pick up passengers northbound when operating south of Steeles Avenue West. Weekday trips were extended north to Major Mackenzie Drive along the former 105B branch, with weekend service turning back at Rutherford Road.
  • April 5, 2020 - Due to reduced ridership stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, service will operate on a Saturday schedule. As a result, the weekday-only service to Major Mackenzie Drive is suspended and all service terminates at Rutherford Road.
  • June 28, 2020 - Weekday service to Major Mackenzie Drive is restored.

Vehicles
