Sheppard West Station is a rapid transit station operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 1035 Sheppard Avenue West, just east of Allen Road. The station is named for, and was selected by the surrounding community. When it originally opened in 1996 it was called Downsview Station, a name it held for over two decades until a name change in May 2017 to its present station name.
History
Opening ceremonies for Downsview Station (as it was initially called) were held March 29th 1996. At the time, it was the new northernmost terminal for a one-stop Spadina line subway extension north of Wilson Station. Brand new Bombardier T1 subway cars 5000-5005 also participated in the opening ceremonies. The station was built with provisions in place for extending the line further north in the future, which came about in the mid-2000's when the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension to Highway 7 in Vaughan was announced.
To avoid naming confusion associated with new stops and existing landmarks along the extension (notably Downsview Park), in September 2010 the TTC recommended changing the station's name from Downsview to Sheppard West, and have the proposed Sheppard West Station named Downsview Park instead.[1] This change was made on May 7, 2017.
Station description
The bus terminal and above ground aspects of the station were designed by Adamson Associates Architects and Marshall Macklin Monaghan, Consulting Engineers.[2] The main entrance is located immediately east of the bus terminal, accessed by a roadway. Just north of the entrance is an abstract sculpture by John McKinnon called "Boney Bus".[3] A parking lot is located south of the bus terminal. The bus terminal is a glass an steel structure with a roof supported by pairs of internal columns. Light is allowed to shine through a central skylight down through to the mezzanine level. Along the walls of the escalators and stairs is a glass tile mosaic by Arlene Stamp called "Sliding Pi".[4]
Stevens Group Architects designed the subway level of the station.[5] The centre platform is nine metres wide, and the large arched ceiling is meant to evoke the aviation heritage of the area. Light shines through a skylight north of the staircases with a shaft lined with a similar mosaic to that leading to the mezzanine.
