GO Transit, or the Greater Toronto Transportation Authority, is an integrated rail- and bus-based commuter system centred on downtown Toronto but increasingly servicing suburb-to-suburb commuters, notably in areas surrounding the Toronto area and the Greater Horseshoe. As of May 2009, GO Transit is a division of the Metrolinx organization.

Started in May 1967, what was meant to be a short 2-year commuter rail test by the government to relieve congestion quickly became a permanent fixture in the Toronto area that carries around 55 million passengers a year. Initially beginning with only the Lakeshore line, over the years new commuter rail services were added on existing freight corridors radiating out of Toronto. Bus service was added in late 1970 with GO-owned vehicles initially operated by private corporations, providing service to areas without train service yet. Over time, the growing bus service became an integral component to GO's network, providing off-peak service to rail corridors, and allowing new service expansion in areas that rail service isn't able to.

On its railway equipment, GO Transit uses a 575 VAC (600VAC nominal) Head End Power (HEP) system that is incompatible with all other HEP systems in North America.

Bus

  • All buses are equipped with a Presto DCU Unit/ticket machine.
  • Starting from 2007, GO introduced a new destination sign display on all its GO buses and each route has its own route number as well as a new way of displaying the route. Instead of the traditional way of showing the route and intermediate destinations, the new format has the final stop encompassing 3/4 of the sign at the top while intermediate stops taking up 1/4 of the sign on the bottom with the route number on the right taking up the whole screen (Eg. Oshawa GO/Hwy 2 94 -> Oshawa GO/York Mills 94 -> Oshawa GO/Scarborough Terminal 94 -> etc.). The side destination signs will only show the route number followed by the final stop and the major road it goes on (Eg. 94 Oshawa GO -> 94 Hwy 2). The first three routes to get it are 94, 95, and 96 because with the introduction of more Hwy 2 service and the new Hwy 2 Express, it is necessary to identify the different routes so customers don't get confused.
  • All buses are equipped with bike racks.
  • All MCIs with halogen bulbs being equipped with LED bulbs for better nighttime visibility
  • During COVID some buses had their seats removed for "Social Distancing". 47 in MCIs, and 70 in Super Los. In 2023 buses started to receive their original seating layouts.
  • In 2023 Regional Express Bus service was started as a trial on Route 19 Mississauga-North York with running 15 minute service both ways during rush hour.

Garages

GO Transit utilizes a number of bus garages throughout the GTA to store and maintain their bus fleet. While some of the bus garages are owned fully by GO Transit, others are rented out from other transit or trucking agencies. Some are satellite garages that provide basic cleaning, maintenance and upkeep, while others such as Steeprock and Streetsville are equipped to handle more extensive maintenance work.

GO owns two main rail maintenance facilities: Willowbrook Rail Maintenance Facility, located in south-eastern Etobicoke, and the Whitby Rail Maintenance Facility in south Whitby. As well, they have two other main yards that are used to store equipment during off-peak hours: Don Yard (located near the mouth of the Don River) and Bathurst North Yard (south of Front Street between Bathurst & Spadina), both of which were former freight yards. Most rail corridors GO operates on have small layover yards or tracks at endpoints for equipment to park and lay over at when they go out of service.
