Route 86 mainly serves Yorkland Street, Newkirk Road, and Red Maple Road.
This route serves the northern Richmond Hill, Beverly Acres, and Bayview Glen communities. It also serves Richmond Hill High School, Bernard Terminal, and Hillcrest Mall. Two trips in the morning and two trips in the afternoon also serve Jean Vanier Catholic High School. Some trips also serve Richmond Hill GO Station.
Route 86 connects to Viva Blue at Bernard Terminal, Yonge/16th/Carrville, and Richmond Hill Centre Terminal, where it also connects to Viva Pink and Viva Purple.

Historic Branches
History
The origins to route 86 come from Richmond Hill Transit's route 6, and parts of routes 2 and 4. When YRT took over operations, the route was dramatically changed. Two branches were formed: 86A and 86B, with the B branch operating during rush hours only. Route 86A operated from Bathurst Street (looping at Castle Rock Drive and Shaw Boulevard) and headed east on Weldrick Road to Bayview Avenue, up to Redstone Road, and looped via Redstone Road, Leslie street, and Farmstead Road. 86B started at Bayview Avenue/Major Mackenzie Drive, and followed the route to Weldrick Road and Walmer Road, heading north on Walmer Road, east along May Avenue, north on Yonge Street, east on Palmer Avenue, and north on Cedar Avenue to Richmond Hill GO Station. It is assumed the name of this route at this time was just 86 Weldrick, since buses did not operate along Newkirk Road, which was already being served by route 82 Newkirk buses.
- September 4, 2001 - Richmond Hill Transit was merged into YRT in January 2001 and on this date, the route branches were renumbered from 6A and 6B to 86A and 86B, respectively, in order to avoid route number duplication across the York Region Transit network.
- May 12, 2002 - Branch 86A is revised to remove service along Major Mackenzie Drive, Pugsley Avenue, Centre Street (except for service to Richmond Hill GO Station), Essex Avenue, and Palmer Avenue in order to provide two-way service along Weldrick Road.
- May 9, 2004 - A general rerouting in the Richmond Hill area simplified service on many routes. Route 86 replaced route 82's routing along Newkirk Road, looping through Bernard Terminal, and continued further north along route 84's former looping, route 84 having been realigned to run along Yonge Street only. Route 86B's diversion to Richmond Hill GO Station was removed, since route 86 now directly connected off of Newkirk Road. Route 86A's former looping was turned into route 243 Redstone GO Shuttle, operating during peak-periods only. Service along Redstone Road was provided by the new 83A Trench branch and a portion of Farmstead Road was serviced by route 82's extension to Elgin Mills Community Centre. Rush hour buses were extended further north to Jefferson Forest Drive, with buses running in both directions along Bernard Avenue and Devonsleigh Boulevard. Service was being operated six days a week at this time.
- September 4, 2005 - With the introduction of Viva and route 84 being removed from Bernard Terminal, service was extended full-time via 84's routing in the Inspiration community and looping along Jefferson Forest Drive.
- September 8, 2009 - Rush hour service extended to Rutherford GO Station operating via Lebovic Campus Drive, Thomas Cook Avenue, and Rutherford Road to the station.
- July 1, 2012 - Route 86 was realigned to run as a north-south route. Service on Tower Hill Drive, Jefferson Forest Drive, and Rollinghill Road within the Inspiration community, and Weldrick Road west of Yonge Street to Bathurst Street is removed. The southern-end of the route is modified to operate via Red Maple Road to terminate at the Richmond Hill Centre Terminal. The route was renamed from Weldrick-Newkirk to Newkirk-Red Maple to reflect the new streets this route serves.
- December 2012 - Route 86 was declared fully accessible.
- September 1, 2024 - Operations of route 86 were transferred from the Southeast Division to the Southwest Division.
