Route 3 mainly serves New Westminster Drive, Atkinson Avenue, Royal Orchard Boulevard, Willowbrook Road, Green Lane, and Simonston Boulevard.

This route serves the Brownridge, Beverley Glen, Uplands, Thornhill, Aileen-Willowbrook, Thornlea, and German Mills communities. It also serves Bathurst Clark Resource Library, St. Elizabeth Catholic High School, Promenade Terminal, Westmount Collegiate Institute, Rosemount Community Centre, Vaughan City Playhouse, Thornhill Village Library, Thornhill Community Centre, Thornlea Secondary School, St. Robert Catholic High School, and The Shoppes on Steeles and 404.

Route 3 connects to Viva Orange at Promenade Terminal, and at Atkinson/Bathurst, and to Viva Blue and Viva Pink at Centre/Yonge and Yonge/Royal Orchard.

3A Promenade Terminal - York University (Weekdays)

History

Markham Transit originally operated a number of short routes in the Thornhill area, namely 5 Thornlea, 6 Thornhill, 7 Romfield, and 8 Royal Orchard. These were eventually amalgamated into 3 Thornhill, which passed into YRT operation in 2001.

May 2002 - York Region Transit combined route 3 and route 18, providing one route running from the Thornhill area to serve Promenade Terminal and York University. This resulted in the renaming of the route to "Thornhill-York University".

October 12, 2003 - Route 3A branch is introduced, providing extra service between York University and Promenade Terminal during rush-hour service only. Route 3A only ran during the university school year, September-April.

September 5, 2004 - Branch 3B is introduced which diverted into the new York University GO Station during train connections only.

May 8, 2005 - Service at Shops-On-Steeles is adjusted to service a new stop at the south side entrance of the mall. North entrance service is discontinued.

September 2005 - Viva Purple was introduced. This provided an easier and faster connection between Promenade Terminal and York University than route 3, and therefore service was reduced on route 3.

April 30, 2006 - Branch 3A was discontinued.

November 6, 2008 - Route 3 was affected by the York University strike between November 6, 2008 and January 29, 2009.

September 2009 - Route 3 was one of the first routes declared fully accessible.

September 2011 - Route 3B was discontinued due to low ridership.

June 30, 2013 - Route 3 was renamed from "Thornhill-York University" to "Thornhill".

December 17, 2017 - With the opening of the Line 1 subway extension to Vaughan, route 3 was extended a short distance from York University to terminate at the new Pioneer Village Terminal. The route was adjusted slightly to serve Pioneer Village Terminal via Ian Macdonald Blvd. and Northwest Gate instead of Ian Macdonald Blvd. and Founders Drive.

April 29, 2018 - Service between the York University Campus and Pioneer Village Terminal is revised to operate via Ian Macdonald Boulevard and Northwest Gate, no longer using Founders Road.

September 2, 2018 - the route was further restructured to discontinue direct service to York University, with buses bypassing York University to terminate at Pioneer Village Terminal.

January 6, 2019 - Eastbound routing is modified and buses no longer operate on Simonston Boulevard and instead travel south on Don Mills Road to Shops on Steeles & 404. Westbound buses make a full counterclockwise loop on Simonston Boulevard.
