98 Yonge (previously 98 Yonge North) is a base route operated by YRT in East Gwillimbury, Newmarket, Aurora and Richmond Hill, ON.

Basic

Route 98 serves Yonge St. between Bernard and Green Lane.

This route has 2 main branches:

This route serves the Richmond Hill, Oak Ridges, Aurora and Newmarket communities. It also serves Bernard and Newmarket terminals and Upper Canada Mall.

98 runs alongside VIVA Blue between Bernard and Newmarket Terminals.

In 2007, ridership increased due to general corridor growth, despite the VIVA Blue service.

History

In September 2005, VIVA was introduced. To provide local service along the northern portion of VIVA Blue, between Newmarket and Bernard Terminal, YRT introduced route 98. It was the first route to operate through both of the new zone boundaries, requiring a 2-zone fare. Even though VIVA service would not be extended north of Bernard until November, the 98 service still started operating in September.

In January 2006, service was revised to operate along Eagle into Newmarket Terimnal, instead of along Davis Dr. in both directions. Also in 2006, late-evening service was revised to be interlined with 99 Yonge South. Route 99 and 98 buses operating after 10:30pm do not service the platforms inside Bernard Terminal, instead service the Viva stops located on Yonge street. The destination sign for all trips after 10:30pm when leaving Finch station is displayed as '98/99 Yonge Street to Newmarket Terminal'. This makes this arrangement the longest YRT route, operating 2km further north than VIVA Blue.

On September 5, 2010, to prevent confusion, with 'North' suffix was removed from route signs.

Vehicles

98 usually operates D40LFs, as well as Orion VIs and EZ Riders on weekends and rush hours. During the late evenings, service is interlined with 99 (operated by Veolia), so buses that normally operate on 99 will be able to be seen on this route.

High Schools

98 serves Dr. J.M. Denison Secondary at Yonge and Bristol, Sir William Mulock Secondary on Sawmill Valley Dr. west of Yonge, Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary on Yonge south of Wellington, and Cardinal Carter Catholic High on Bloomington west of Yonge.

Route Notes

  • Route interlines with 99 after 10:30 PM (northbound) and 11:45 PM (southbound) 7 nights a week.
