501 Queen is a streetcar route operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Route Details
This route services Queen Street between Neville Park Boulevard and Roncesvalles Avenue. It also provides service on The Queensway between Roncesvalles Avenue and Humber Loop, and Lake Shore Boulevard West between Humber Loop and Long Branch loop.
Effective January 3, 2021, this route is split into 3 branches due to streetcar overhead upgrades and construction on the King-Queen-Queensway-Roncesvalles intersection. Streetcars will only operate between Neville Park and Wolseley Loop with buses supplementing service west of Bathurst Street. Eastern terminals include Neville Park Loop for the branch 501, and University Avenue for replacement bus branches 501L and 501H. Western terminals include Bathurst Street for branch 501, Long Branch Loop for 501L, and Humber Loop for 501H.
Branches
This route has 3 branches:
- 501 Bathurst - Neville Park
- 501L Long Branch - University
- 501H Humber- University
History
- October 19, 2009 to November 21, 2009[1] - Route was split in two in hopes of improving route reliability. The eastern portion ran from Neville Park to Shaw, and the western portion from Long Branch to Parliament. The two sections overlapped for four kilometers between Shaw and Parliament. However the experiment proved a failure, and the route was reverted back to its original form.
- May 10, 2015 - Route is added to the Ten Minute Network with existing service levels between Neville Park Loop and Humber Loop operating at intervals of ten minutes or better whenever the subway is open.
- January 3, 2016 - Ten Minute service is expanded over the entire route. With streetcar service split at Humber Loop to improve service reliability, all streetcar service between Long Branch Loop and Neville Park Loop will now operate at intervals of ten minutes or better whenever the subway is open.
- January 3, 2021 - Route partially operated by buses due to construction at the King-Queen-Queensway-Roncesvalles (KQQR) intersection, TTC trackwork, and overhead upgrades. Streetcars operate as far west as McCaul Loop with replacement bus branches 501L and 501P operating to Long Branch and Park Lawn Loops, respectively.
- March 31, 2021 - Construction commences on the KQQR intersection. Branch 501P is redesignated 501H and is changed to terminate at an off-street loop on the northeast corner of The Queensway and High Street near Humber Loop. Westbound bus branches 501L and 501H divert both ways via Dufferin Street and King Street West.
- November 21, 2021 - With the completion of Phase 1 of the KQQR construction project, 501H and 501L buses operate direct along Queen Street West and the diversion via King Street West and Dufferin Street is removed.
- May 8, 2022 - Branches 501H and 501L now terminate in the east at University Avenue with eastbound buses designated 501U.
- September 4, 2022 - Streetcar service is extended to Dufferin Street at the Dufferin Gate Loop. Branch 501L is shortened to terminate at Queen Street and Gladstone Avenue. Branch 501H is discontinued.
