This route provides service on Eglinton Avenue East between Kennedy Road and Kingston Road, Kingston Road between Eglinton Avenue East and Meadowvale Road, and Meadowvale Road between Kingston Road and Sheppard Avenue East. This route operates express making limited stops at major intersections only between Kennedy Station and Kingston Road/Celeste Drive. All stops are served east of Celeste Drive to Meadowvale Road/Sheppard Avenue East. The eastern terminal is Meadowvale Loop at Sheppard Avenue East, and the western terminal is Kennedy Station for its one branch, 986. This route operates during the peak periods on weekdays only.

History
- March 14, 1988 - Route introduced as the express branch of the 86 Scarborough, known as the 86C Scarborough Express operating from Kennedy Station to Sheppard via Eglinton Avenue East, Kingston Road and Meadowvale Road.
- February 14, 2000 - Route renumbered to 86E Scarborough Express.
- June 19, 2005 - Route made accessible

- January 7, 2019 - With the implementation of the TTC's express network, branch 86E is given its own route number and name and is now designated as 986 Scarborough Express.
- March 23, 2020 - Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the re-allocation of service to busier routes, service is suspended until further notice.
- October 11, 2020 - Dedicated rapid bus lanes were rolled out along Eglinton Avenue, Kingston Road, and Morningside Avenue between Brimley Road and U of T Scarborough as part of a project to decrease travel times along the Kennedy Station - UTSC corridor. Service is restored to pre-pandemic levels and the route now utilizes the rapid lanes on Eglinton Avenue and Kingston Road between Brimley Road and Morningside Avenue.
- March 28, 2021 - This route was transferred to Malvern upon the opening of the brand new McNicoll Division.
