Eglinton Station is a rapid transit station operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 2190 Yonge Street at the southwest corner of Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue West.

History

In 1949, the citizens of the City of Toronto voted largely in favour of a subway and the TTC settled on the current alignment up Yonge Street from Union Station to Eglinton Avenue. Eglinton Station opened as the northern terminus of the Yonge Line (now known as Line 1 Yonge-University-Spadina) on March 30, 1954. Since its opening, the station has attracted a significant amount of development in its vicinity.

Eglinton Station will become an interchange station with the opening of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT in 2021. An expanded concourse and a new platform level began construction in the summer of 2016 with the relocation of utilities. A "cut and cover method", similar to how Eglinton Station was originally constructed, will be used again.

Station description

Eglinton Station has six entrances, all of which have been incorporated into new development since the station opened. Two entrances are part of the Canada Square Complex. One, at Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue West, is incorporated into 2200 Yonge Street which opened in 1962. The second, further south, is incorporated into 2190 Yonge Street which opened in 1987. Two other entrances are located in Yonge Eglinton Centre, which opened in 1975. Another two entrances are located in One Eglinton East and the TD Canada Trust branch (which will become a condo), repsectively.

Underground passageways connect the station entrances to the concourse level. Beyond the fare gates is a large retail space and access to the subway platforms below. To the west of the concourse is an access ramp to the adjoining bus terminal.

The subway platform begins immediately south of Eglinton Avenue West and extends further south. Trains operate alongside a centre platform. Escalators and stairs that lead to the concourse level are located along the platform's length. An elevator to the bus platform and Yonge Street, which was commissioned in 2004, is available at the south end.

Like the other stations on the original Yonge Line, the finishes at Eglinton station include terrazzo flooring and Pearl Grey Vitrolite wall tiles with black trim. During the mid-1980s, renovations replaced much of the Vitrolite tiles in the subway system, however, a significant amount of the original tiling was retained at Eglinton. The most notable change is the stainless steel and red glazed ceramic tiles on the support columns at platform level.
