Finch West Station is a rapid transit stop owned and operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The station is located on Keele Street, just north of Finch Avenue West. There is a parking lot for 358 vehicles with passenger drop-off and pick-up just north of the bus terminal.
History
The design of Finch West Station was awarded in 2008 to the design team lead by The Spadina Group Associates (TSGA) working with Richard Stevens Architects and Alsop Architects. The conceptual design of the station was approved by the Commission in January 2010.[1] Public consultation was carried out throughout 2010.
The construction of the new Toronto Fire Hall No. 141 at the station site began in July 2010. It was relocated to allow for construction of Finch West Station. Construction of the station itself began in July 2011. By the end of April 2012, tunneling had reached the station.
Station description
The main entrance is located on the west side of Keele Street just north of Finch Avenue West. This building features fritted glass along with decorative coloured glass in green, orange, and purple. The roof structure above the glazing is clad with fibrous cement panels with black and white vertical line graphics. An automatic entrance, bus terminal, and secure bicycle parking are located under an elevated substation facility in a building on the east side of Keele Street. It is similar in design to the main entrance.
Finch West has two concourses with one at each end of the station. Passengers arriving by car are served by the north concourse along with the bus terminal. They enter the concourse outside of the fare paid area, while those arriving by bus descend into the paid area. Passengers using the main entrance are served by the south concourse. A knockout panel at the south concourse preserves a future connection the Finch West LRT. The two concourses are linked by a corridor over the east side of platform level.
Passengers descend stairs and escalators from both concourses to platform level. They will also be able to utilize one elevator. The platform is between the two subway tracks and features a high ceiling with central support columns.
Flooring throughout the station makes use of two-tone terrazzo with stairs in dark grey granite. Wall panels in the bus terminal and concourses are ceramic in either two-tone yellow or two-tone grey. This motif is shared with the walls above the platform. Bruce McLean developed the public art for the station, which is integrated into the structural design. The structural supports for the bus terminal and those at platform level reference ancient designs.[2]
