North York Centre Station SmallAccessible.gif is a rapid transit station operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 5102 Yonge Street at the intersection of Park Home/Empress Avenue and Yonge Street. The station serves the high-rise and commercial buildings at North York Centre in the neighbourhood of Willowdale.

History

When Line 1 Yonge-University was extended north to Finch Station, North York Centre Station was not in the plans to be built. It was in 1987 when North York Centre station was built in between Sheppard-Yonge Station and Finch Station. The station was built by excavating around the existing subway tracks.

Station description

The station architecture is comprised of three levels: street entrance level, an underground concourse level, and platform level. The station has three entrances. The first entrance is located in Mel Lastman Square on the west side of Yonge Street north of North York Boulevard. The two other entrances are located on the east and west sides of Yonge Street south of Park Home/Empress Avenue. The only accessible entrance is located on the east side of Yonge Street south of Empress Avenue. All three station entrances were built into existing high-rise and commercial buildings.

At platform level, two distinct murals on the northbound and southbound platforms are displayed. The murals were created by North York artists Nicholas and Susana Graven and the pieces are titled "Top of the North Hill" and "Traffic at Yonge and Sheppard". The murals were made using over 5000 pieces of glazed ceramic tiles and depict scenes of North York during the 19th century.[1]

The station has no bus terminal so connections to the 97 Yonge and 320 Yonge buses can be made at the stops on Yonge Street. A transfer is required.
