Main Street Station is a rapid transit station and bus/streetcar terminal operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The station is located at 315 Main Street. The bus terminal stretches between Main Street and Barrington Avenue, north of Danforth Avenue, but surface vehicles can only enter and exit the terminal from Main Street.
When the Bloor-Danforth line was extended east and Main Street Station was opened in 1968, the TTC was still using the 2-fare system. Since Main Street was the eastern fare zone boundary, the decision was made to put the bus/streetcar terminal outside the fare-paid zone so that transferring passengers would be sure to pay their second fare. When the TTC opened Main Street Station, the collector's booth and fare gates were located on the mezzanine level. When the TTC eliminated the fare zone system, they moved the collector's booth and fare gates up to the bus terminal in front of the street entrance. This is one reason why Main Street Station's mezzanine level is bigger than most stations, especially to other stations on the Bloor-Danforth line.
Elevators were activated in Main Street Station in October 2004. With the accessible bus routes serving the station, it now allows wheelchair-bound patrons an alternative into the subway system if an elevator at their home station is not functioning. As of February 2007, all bus routes that serve Main Street Station were made accessible.
The bus terminal at Main Street Station is located within the fare-paid area of the station. Passengers can use the street entrance on Main Street to access the terminal. The bus terminal is simple, with 5 bus bays stretching along the north and east sides the terminal. The south side is used as the streetcar platform. Two stairwells and an elevator extend down to the mezzanine.
The mezzanine is a large rectangular area with stairwells and elevators at each corner. In the northwest corner is the elevator to the westbound platform. In the northeast corner, there are two stairwells that lead down to the westbound platform. In the southwest corner are the two stairwells leading up to the bus/streetcar terminal as well as the street exit. There are the two stairwells leading to the eastbound platform as well as the elevator going up to the bus/streetcar terminal & street level and the eastbound platform in the southeast corner. Along the east side of the mezzanine, between the stairwells to the westbound and eastbound platforms, is a Gateway Newsstand store.
The subway platforms are of the typical Bloor-Danforth style. The colour scheme is a yellow based with maroon trim.
