This route mainly provides service along Lawrence Avenue East between Kennedy Road and Starspray Boulevard. This route operates express making limited stops between Kennedy Station and Kingston Road. All stops are served east of Kingston Road. Its western terminal is Kennedy Station and the eastern terminal is Starspray Boulevard for its one branch, 954. This route operates during the peak-period on weekdays only.

History
- May 10, 1992 - Route begins operation as the 54B Lawrence East peak period branch of route 54. Buses operated from Lawrence East Station via Lawrence Avenue East to Morningside Avenue, looping in the east end via north on Morningside and southwest on Kingston Road. This loop was later revised to operate via north on Morningside, east on Kingston Road and south on Collingsgrove. Operated from Birchmount Division.
- January 3, 1993 - Shared with Birchmount and Eglinton Divisions.
- February 13, 1994 - The 54B branch is replaced with the new 54E Lawrence East Express. Buses operate westbound during morning peak periods local from Starspray to Markham Road and then express to Lawrence East Station, stopping at McCowan only beforing returning east deadheading. During the afternoon peak, buses operate express eastbound from Lawrence East Station stopping at McCowan before continuing local from Markham Road to Starspray with westbound trips deadheading.
- February 18, 1996 - Moved from Birchmount Division to Malvern Division, with Eglinton Division retaining some runs. 54E buses provide local service eastbound from Lawrence East Station to Starspray.
- May 4, 1998 - Eastbound 54E buses run local from Lawrence East Station to Morningside only and then run non-stop to Starspray during AM peak.
- June 12, 2000 - Two westbound stops at Rushley Drive (David and Mary Thomson C.I., 2740 Lawrence Avenue East) and Midland Avenue were added. Afternoon buses continue to deadhead on their westbound trips changed to be in service in their “off peak” direction in both rush hour trips.
- March 31, 2002 - Moved to the newly-opened Eglinton Division on Comstock Road, with Malvern Division continuing to operate this route.
- February 17, 2008 - Route made accessible.
- November 23, 2008 - Full operation transferred to Eglinton Division.
- May 25, 2009 - Route is now equipped with bike racks.
- September 5, 2017 - An eastbound stop on Midland Avenue is added.
- September 2, 2018 - The 54E Express is rebranded into the 954 Lawrence East Express as part of the launch of TTC's express network.
- February 18, 2020 - The Rushley Drive stop was shifted to Brockley Drive after the new David and Mary Thomson C.I. building opened.
- March 23, 2020 - Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the re-allocation of service to busier routes, service is suspended until further notice.
- November 23, 2020 - Full peak-period weekday service is restored to pre-pandemic levels as a result of increased system ridership.
- October 8, 2023 - With the permanent closure of Line 3, the western terminus is shifted from Lawrence East Station to Kennedy Station. Buses operate north via Kennedy Road and south via Midland Avenue.
- November 20, 2023 - The Midland Avenue stop on Lawrence Avenue East was shifted to a new stop on Midland Avenue just south of Lawrence.
- September 1, 2024 - Local stops between Markham Road and Kingston Road are removed to improve travel times. Buses now operate local between Kingston Road and Starspray Loop.
