172 Cherry Street SmallAccessible.gif was a former bus route operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Route Details

The final routing of route 172.

This route provided service to Cherry Beach from St. Andrew and King Stations. It also provided service on The Esplanade, Berkeley Street, Front Street East, Parliament Street, Mill Street, Cherry Street and Commissioners Street. It looped counterclockwise via Logan Avenue, Lake Shore Boulevard East and Carlaw Avenue. At the western terminal, the route looped clockwise via Wellington Street, York Street and King Street. Branch 172B, a seasonal service branch also serviced south of Commissioners Street to Cherry Beach. The western terminal is St Andrew Station and the eastern terminal is Carlaw Avenue for both branches, 172A and 172B.

History

  • May 9, 2004 - Route operation commences.
  • July 26, 2004 - Route no longer serves the Toronto International Ferry Terminal due to its closing.
  • November 22, 2004 - Weekday service cancelled due to low ridership.
  • December 19, 2004 - Service south of Commissioners Street ends.
  • May 8, 2005 - Service south of Commissioners Street resumes.
  • June 30, 2005 - Service to the Rochester Ferry begins due to its operation resuming.
  • January 2, 2006 - Service to the ferry terminal ends again.
  • September 5, 2006 - Weekday service on the 172A branch ends. Service south of Commissioners Street of weekends and holidays ends.
  • May 17, 2007 - Weekday evening service resumes, weekend and holiday service south of Commissioners Street resumes.
  • November 23, 2008 - All service suspended on this route for the winter season.
  • May 24, 2009 - Summer service to Cherry Beach is replaced by the new 72B Pape branch, permanently ending service on 172.
  • January 5, 2014 - Route 172 is revived as it is split from route 72 Pape due to schedule delays as a result of the Union Station construction.
  • July 21, 2014 - Route 172 is extended to Carlaw to provide a better connection to the route 72 Pape.
  • June 19, 2016 - As a result of a customer survey, service on The Esplanade, Mill Street, and to Cherry Beach is replaced by the new 121 Fort York-Esplanade route, permanently ending service on 172.
