Keele Station is a rapid transit station and bus terminal owned and operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 21 Keele Street on the east side of Keele Street just north of Bloor Street West.
Keele Station was the western terminus of the original Bloor-Danforth subway when it opened on February 26, 1966. After the opening of the new subway line, a majority of the Bloor and Danforth streetcar line became defunct with only stub sections running to and from the western and eastern subway terminals of Keele and Woodbine Stations. At Keele Station, a temporary streetcar terminal, separate from the bus terminal, was built on the northeast corner of Indian Grove and Bloor Street West to serve the Bloor streetcar stub running west along Bloor Street West to Jane Loop. The temporary streetcar terminal even featured a moving ramp to the subway platforms. However, after the subway was further extended to Islington in 1968, the Bloor and Danforth streetcar was completely eliminated and the temporary streetcar terminal and the moving ramp at Keele Station were shut down. A retirement home now stands at the site of the temporary streetcar terminal loop at Keele Station. The moving ramp is sealed off from the public but the bottom-end of the moving ramp passageway can be accessed through a gray door beside the eastbound platform stairs just inside the TTC Commuter parking lot automatic entrance while the top-end can be noticed by an indent in the eastbound platform walls.[1]
Station description
The station architecture is comprised of two levels: street entrance level and platform level.
The main entrance of the station is located on the east side of Keele Street north of Bloor Street West. The collector's booth, fare gates, and station bus terminal are just inside the main entrance. The station bus terminal stretches between Keele Street and Indian Grove and features 3 bays which wrap around the terminal. Stairs and escalators from the bus terminal area lead up to the eastbound and westbound subway platforms.
The fully enclosed subway platforms are situated above ground and span over Keele Street and Indian Grove. The subway platforms are of the typical Bloor-Danforth style, with peach-coloured wall tiles and a red trim.
