As part of the TTC's [[Toronto Transit Commission Easier Access|Easier Access Program]] to make all TTC stations accessible, Glencairn Station will receive two new elevators to allow barrier-free access between street-level and the subway platform. Installed as a new addition to the west-side of the Glencairn Avenue south building, the elevator spanning between street-level and the underground concourse will be outside the fare-paid area. The second elevator is located within the fare-paid area and will span between the underground concourse and the centre subway platform. The Glencairn Avenue north building and Viewmount Avenue automatic entrance will not be accessible. In addition to the new elevators, other station improvements such as improved signage, CCTV cameras, and improved lighting at the entrances are included in the scope of the project. Glencairn Station is a rapid transit station operated by the Toronto Transit Commission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is located at 785 Glencairn Avenue with platform level located in the centre median of the Allen Road expressway partially spanning the underside of Glencairn Avenue.
Station description
The architect that designed the station was Adamson Associates.[1] The station design is comprised of two entrance buildings on the north and south sides of Glencairn Avenue with escalators that lead to an intermediate concourse where the collector's booth is located. Beyond the collector's booth, an escalator and stairs lead to platform level. In addition, there is an automatic station entrance on the north side of Viewmount Avenue which has stairs leading directly to platform level.
The station has no bus terminal so the connection to 14 Glencairn can be made at the bus stops outside the Glencairn Avenue entrances.
Platform level is situated in the centre median of the Allen Road expressway and there are escalators and stairs inside all three entrances that lead to platform level. The centre island platform has an open-air design with concrete pillars and X-beam steel ceiling support pillars along the centre of the platform. Also, there are glass enclosed passenger waiting boxes in the centre of the island platform. The ceiling over the centre platform is a central vaulted glass roof that spans the length of the station allowing natural sunlight into the station. The station once featured a multicoloured stained glass ceiling skylight made by Rita Letendre called "Joy".[2] Unfortunately, it had faded over the years and was replaced with a clear glass skylight at the request of the artist. The platform side walls are concrete with rounded rectangular glass panels running the length of the station. As part of the TTC's initiative to replace the leaking skylight and structural supports, the TTC commissioned the artist to reinterpret the original skylight artwork using digital technologies to have it integrated into the new skylight. With joint-funding between the City, the TTC, and the Federal government through the Public Transit Infrastructure Fund (PTIF), a $10.7 million contract was awarded for the Glencairn Station skylight replacement project in July 2017.[3] Construction on the skylight began in August 2017 with an initial completion date of March 2019, which was later pushed to December of the same year.[4] Construction was finally completed and the final product was revealed during a ceremony on September 12, 2020.[5]
Easier Access
As part of the TTC's Easier Access Program to make all TTC stations accessible, Glencairn Station will receive two new elevators to allow barrier-free access between street-level and the subway platform. Preliminary construction began in Fall 2021 and is scheduled to be completed in 2024.[6]
