Calgary Transit route 89 Lions Park / North Pointe is a route designed to service Lions Park LRT Station & North Pointe Terminal
History
1991 - Route introduced as "89 Beddington / Lions Park" to provide a crosstown connection for the communities of MacEwan, Sandstone and Beddington, allowing customers to connect to Lions Park LRT Station and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). Trips ran only one way, from Beddington to Lions Park Station during AM rush hour, and from Lions Park Station to Beddington during PM rush hour. Trips in the morning to Lions Park Station would start westbound on Beddington Blvd at Bedford Drive NE, and would travel west/northwest on Beddington Blvd N, northwest/west on Sandstone Drive NW, west on Sandarac Drive NW, west/south/east on MacEwan Drive NW, south on 14 Street NW, west on 16 Avenue NW, south on 19 Street NW and east on 14 Avenue NW towards Lions Park Station. Trips in the afternoon towards Beddington would follow the reverse, except trips would start eastbound on 14 Avenue NW, and would use 14 Avenue NW to access 14 Street NW, skipping 19 Street NW and 16 Avenue NW.
May 25, 2020 - Route suspended until August 31, 2020 due to COVID-19 service restrictions.
June 28, 2021 - Route combined with Route 430 Sandstone / North Pointe, with Route 89 being renamed to "89 Lions Park / North Pointe". Trips would be revised to serve both directions of the route during AM and PM rush hour, and were revised to operate with community shuttle buses at a 40 minute frequency. All routing on Beddington Blvd NW/NE was discontinued, and trips would be re-routed via Berkshire Blvd NW, Beddington Trail NW, Country Hills Blvd NW and Harvest Hills Blvd N to serve North Pointe Terminal.
August 30, 2021 - One Lions Park Station trip in the morning and one North Pointe Terminal trip in the afternoon is revised to serve Madeline D'Houet School in the community of Kensington. The trip in the morning towards the school would depart Lions Park LRT Station eastbound on 14 Avenue NW, and would travel east on 14 Avenue NW, south on 14 Street NW and west on Kensington Road NW towards the school, terminating westbound on Kensington Road at 21 Street NW. Trips in the afternoon would start eastbound on 1 Avenue at 21 Street NW, and would travel east on 1 Avenue NW, south on 21 Street NW, west on Kensington Road NW, north on Crowchild Trail NW, east on 16 Avenue NW, south on 19 Street NW and east on 14 Avenue NW to Lions Park LRT Station. Trips would then continue to North Pointe Terminal normally.
June 27, 2022 - North Pointe Terminal bus-only road opens. All service along Country Village Road was eliminated, with the 89 now travelling along the new bus-only road.
September 4, 2023 - School trips revised to serve Queen Elizabeth High School, and all trips are revised to run with conventional buses besides the PM school trip, which operates with articulated buses. From Lions Park LRT Station, AM school trips would be revised to travel east on 14 Avenue NW, south on 14 Street NW, west on 5 Avenue NW, south on 22 Street NW and east on 1 Avenue NW, terminating eastbound on 1 Avenue at 21 Avenue NW. PM school trips would start eastbound on 1 Avenue at 21 Avenue NW, and would travel east on 1 Avenue NW, south on 21 Street NW, west on Kensington Road NW, north on Crowchild Trail NW, east on 5 Avenue NW, north on 14 Street NW, west on 16 Avenue NW, south on 19 Street NW and east on 14 Avenue NW to Lions Park LRT Station. Trips would then continue to North Pointe Terminal normally.
