Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District, known as AC Transit provides public transportation in Alameda County and Contra Costa County in the Bay Area in California. Connections are available with BART, San Francisco MUNI, WestCAT, Union City Transit, San Mateo County Transit District, and Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.

History

Alameda and Contra Costa counties voted to establish the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District in November, 1956. ^[1]
The AC Transit District purchased the majority of Key System Transit Lines fleet and property, and continued operation of the majority of local and transbay lines (some of which are still in operation today).

300-314		1963	GMC	TDH-5304	Detroit Diesel 6V71N	Allison VH	306 transferred to County Connection 9901 for usage as a training bus in the early 1980's.^[27]^[28]^[29] It retired at County Connection around the late 1980's and was bought by private owner Ron Hook. It was then repainted back into the AC Transit paint scheme. He scrapped it in the late 2000's due to a major engine issue. A salvage record was noted. 311 was modified with newer headlights, newer windows and a Cummins L10 engine. It survives in Williams, CA, but its Cummins L10 was replaced with a 6V71N. 1 unit (between 300-364) was bought by a private owner at an unknown location for an RV conversion, but was destroyed in the Santa Rosa wildfire in October 2017.^[30]

Plate: 2VSH535). Its registration was not renewed. It was then repainted back into the AC Transit paint scheme.^[34]^[35] 581 was spotted in Washington in non-operational condition circa March 2019.^[36]

It was the first GM transit spec'd bus (not a suburban) to have an 8V71N engine installed. Bought by Loren Joplin/Dreamliner Bus Leasing & Service in Perris, CA.^[37] It was listed on ebay in early 2015^[38] and was later sold off to a private owner in New Jersey.
626-635		1968	GMC	T6H-5305	Detroit Diesel 6V71N	Allison VH9	627 to CyRide 922. 632 was once part of Ralph Cantos's "Comatose Bus Collection" in Industry, CA, (later taken over by Egon Kafka in Fontana, CA).

Some units including 706 were borrowed by Golden Gate Transit on the weekends to go to Stinson Beach and Bolinas. 703 was bought by Commuter Bus Lines/Transit Sales International. It was used for Lynwood Trolley.^[39] 704 was bought by a private owner and is stored in Williams, CA. 705 is preserved by a private owner. 707 went to Williams, CA, but was totaled & scrapped. 708 was bought by Scott Richards/Regional Transit Service. It was scrapped in early 2015.^[40] 711 was spotted on craigslist in Anchorage, AK in June 2016.^[41] 712 became a Dial-A-Ride bus. It was later bought by Eastshore lines and ended up in Williams, CA where it remains today.

It was acquired by Scott Richards/Regional Transit Service in September 2017 and is currently undergoing repairs. 805 was said to be at an unknown sale, possibly along with 809.

Suburban configuration (no rear door) Mainly ran for Dumbarton Express routes and occasionally transbay routes until 2009, where they were no longer ran by AC Transit. However, they continued being used for Dumbarton Express until 2016.
810-864		1973	GMC	T6H-4523N	Detroit Diesel 6V71N	Allison VH9	815 was bought by Loren Joplin/Dreamliner Bus Leasing & Service in Perris, CA.^[42] It was listed on ebay in May 2007.^[25] It eventually sold to a private owner in Reno, NV. 817 is preserved by a private owner in the New York area. It may have been originally purchased by Scott Richards/Regional Transit Service from auction. 819 to Eastshore Lines (retained the AC Transit paint scheme). It is currently in Williams, CA and is used as a parts & storage bus. 834 was spotted in a yard in Seattle, WA with some Gray Line of Seattle buses on 1/27/1993. Its powertrain was removed.^[43] 839 was bought by private owner Ron Hook. It was traded to AC Transit for bus 2098 in the early 2000's and was kept on the property until circa 2013. It was then scrapped. 844 lost brakes and rear ended 949 on 2/27/1987. Both buses were retired afterward. 864 was bought by private owner Ron Hook. 1 unit was bought by a private owner and converted into an RV. It was listed on Craigslist in Nicholas, CA on 5/26/2018.^[44]

It was sold to a private owner in Jackson, CA circa 2016 (Lic. Plate: DBC BUS). It was listed on Facebook Marketplace on 3/30/2021.^[45] 949 was rear ended by 844 on 2/27/1987. Both buses were retired afterward. 949 was bought by Loren Joplin/Dreamliner Bus Leasing & Service in Perris, CA. He cut out the front shell & had it for sale on his property in Perris. 965 was bought by private owner Ron Hook.^[46] It was sold to Line 51 Brewing Company in Oakland, CA in early 2020. It was converted into a static beer tapper.^[47] 969 was bought by Loren Joplin/Dreamliner Bus Leasing & Service in Perris, CA.^[48] It was eventually sold to a private owner.

They were repowered with Detroit Diesel 6V92TA engines. 1 unit was repowered with a Detroit Diesel 6V92TA engine. 1 or 2 units were repowered with Cummins L10 engines with Voith D864.2 transmissions. 1097-1099 & 1150 were used for BART Express service until circa 1990. Some units were later spotted in Tijuana, Mexico. Some units were bought by Zacher's Auto Salvage in Harbor City, CA. 1503 & 1520 was spotted in 2004. They remained until circa 2007 and were scrapped.^[52]^[25] 1539 was spotted on 6/27/2006.^[53]

Sold off in 1991-1992. 1607 was bought Transit Sales International.^[54] Some units (including 1624-1626, 1628 & 1629) were bought by Commuter Bus Lines on 7/30/1991. Many units were bought by Transit Sales International in August 1992. Several units were sold to a MAN bus dealership called Power Services International in Minneapolis in 1992. 1616 was given to Scott Richards/Regional Transit Service, but had major electrical issues. It was sold to private owner Ron Hook and later a 3rd private owner, but eventually caught on fire on the highway.^[55]

Retired in 1996. 1 unit was bought by a private owner/dealer in Reno, NV.^[56]

They were not renumbered in numerical order consistent with the VINs and SCCTD fleet numbers. The first units to arrive on the property were quickly renumbered and put into service, while the other units that needed work were renumbered and entered service later. Ex-SCCTD 2502 was damaged in an accident when being delivered to AC Transit on 6/2/1988. As a result, it was never renumbered to 1713 or repainted into the AC Transit livery. 1800-1829 (2nd)		1989	NFI	D60	Detroit Diesel 6V92TA	Allison HTB-748	First D60's built by NFI, not including the 1988 demo/prototype. 1815-1821 sported the San Pablo livery for uses on the 72, 72L & 73/72M routes. Last active units retired on 12/19/2003. Some units were bought by Zacher's Auto Salvage in Harbor City, CA. 3 units (including 1825) were sold to Scott Richards/Regional Transit Service. Later they were sold to Frank's All City Lines. Eventually they were all more than likely scrapped.^[59] Many units were bought by Transit Sales International. Several units were sold to Schlitterbahn Waterparks in New Braunfels, TX. Some retained their original fleet numbers. Notable units spotted throughout 2011-2018: 1801, 1802, 1803, 1804, 1806, 1819, 1821, 1822, 1826 and a few other units.^[60]^[61] 1810 was spotted intact in 2011.^[62] 1812 was sold and spotted at Autobus Dupont in Quebec, Canada in June 2006.^[63] 1816 & 1823 were spotted intact on 6/10/2015.^[64] They were finally moved off of the property by summer 2018 and were likely scrapped.

Retired in 1984. 8030 was involved in an accident and was retained post-1984 due to a legal hold. It was spotted in service in the late 1980's and was the last active unit.^[80] All units (excluding 8014, 8016 & 8030) were initially sold to Metro Apple Express in New York, NY & 1 other agency in 1984. 3 units were spotted in Red Hook Brooklyn, NY in 2007. Their current statuses remain unknown.
