The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (branded as VTA) is a transit operator headquartered in San Jose, California that serves the surrounding Silicon Valley and greater Santa Clara County.

History

Public transit bus service in the San Jose area was initially provided by San Jose City Lines, Peerless Stages, and Palo Alto Transit. In 1972, the Santa Clara County Transit District (SCCTD) was created after voter referendum, and bus service turned from these three companies to "County Transit."

VTA was originally formed as the Santa Clara County Transit District (SCCTD). Before the reorganization to SCVTA, the agency was often branded as Transportation Agency or TA from late 1993 up to 1995.[1] On January 1, 1995, SCCTD was merged with Santa Clara County's Congestion Management department and legally remained SCCTD for about a year. At the same time (1995), the common use name changed to VTA. The official name change was delayed due to Sacramento politics.[2]
