Golden Gate Transit

Golden Gate Transit is a transit operator servicing San Francisco and areas north of it, including Marin County and Sonoma County. It is funded and run by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District.

History

Golden Gate Transit began operations in July 1971.

  • 502 became a church bus in Richmond, CA and was stored there for years. However, it was sent to Simms Metal Management and scrapped around June 2016.

    • 616 was spotted running in the East Bay by an unknown owner on 5/11/2016.
  • 618 returned to service in 2013 to replace 646. It retired in March 2015 and was sold to WestCAT as 805 in February 2016.

  • 1108 was bought by Jeff Davis (Diamond West) in Enumclaw, WA. It was used as a shuttle at the Seattle Boat Show from 1999-2006. It was sold off to a private owner in 2012.
  • 1124 to Party Lounge as Future Lounge 8902 in Orange County, CA.[2]
  • 1145 was the original "Whale Bus;" seen for sale on craigslist.
  • 1146 is being converted into an RV by a private owner.
  • 1111, 1139 & 6 other units to Million Air Express (MAX).
  • 1171, 1175 & 1180 to Reno for freeway commute service.
  • Some units to Manhattanville College.
  • 1107 was retrofitted with a Detroit Diesel Series 50 in the mid-1990's.
  • 1158 was retrofitted with a Detroit Diesel 6L71TA & Allison V731 powertrain.

  • 1181, 1192, 1195, 1225, 1226, 1228, 1231, 1234, 1238, 1239, 1241, 1242 & 1243 were put up for auction on 12/3/2014.
    • 1195 to Optimum Transportation (Memphis, TN).
  • 1198 & possibly other units to Amador Stage Lines same numbers.
  • Many others were leased, bought by dealers and bought by private owners; see the series page.

  • 1251, 1262 & 1264 transferred to Marin Transit (same numbers) in fall 2013.
  • 1261 was painted into the Larkspur Ferry Shuttle scheme in 2014 and was mainly used on route 25.
