Golden Gate Transit

Golden Gate Transit is a transit operator servicing San Francisco and areas north of it, including Marin County and Sonoma County. It is funded and run by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District.

History

Golden Gate Transit began operations in July 1971.

  • Retired in 2001. Sold off in 2003.
  • 501 was sold to Mendocino Transit Authority in July 2003. It may have never operated and may have became a parts bus.
  • 502 was sold to a church in Richmond, CA in June 2003. It was stored there until 2016. It was sold as scrap to Diego Truck Repair, Inc. in Greenbrae, CA in March 2016. It was finally scrapped at Simms Metal Management in Richmond, CA in June 2016.[2]
  • 503 & 504 were sold to A-Z Bus Sales in Colton, CA in November 2003.

  • Used for the route 66 Muir Woods shuttle starting in 2005 until Marin Transit took over the route circa 2011.
  • Painted into the Larkspur Ferry Shuttle scheme in 2013.
    • Usually used on routes 25, 31 & 37.
  • Retired on 6/12/2016; all units are part of the contingency/training fleet.

  • Ex-Golden Empire Transit 8620, 8623, 8702, 8704, 86xx, 8622 & 8627; leased from Shuttle Bus Leasing/Transit Sales International multiple times between 2007-2011.
  • Used for the route 66 Muir Woods shuttle.
  • Approximately 6 or 7 units.
    • 4 units numbered 510-513 were leased in summer 2007.
    • 6 units numbered 536-541 were leased in 2008-2011. 510, 511 & 513 were renumbered. 512 may have been renumbered 536, but confirmation is needed.
  • Former fleet numbers & Lic. plates:
    • 510, 538: Ex 8620 (Lic. plate: 5YNL269).
    • 511, 537: Ex 8623 (Lic. plate: 5YNL272).

  • Retired in 2011-2012.
  • 602-630 are 1997 models.
  • Kept for contingency & training purposes until 2015. Most units remained on GGT property until 2017.
  • 618 returned to service in 2013 to replace 646. It retired in March 2015 and was sold to WestCAT as 805 in February 2016.
  • 620 was used for an evacuation drill, which involved the bus being tipped over onto adjacent cars. It was scrapped in Richmond, CA shortly after in 2012.
  • All other units were put up for auction on 12/13/2016.
    • 622 & 623 were bought by Finish Line Charter.
    • 628 was bought by LA Charter Bus Lines in Los Angeles, CA and became 5701. It was later listed on ebay in early 2017[5] and was eventually sold to a ferry company in Washington in March 2017.
    • The rest were bought by Transit Sales International/Complete Coach Works. Many were spotted at Alameda Point.

  • 2000 models.
  • Most units are part of the the contingency/training fleet; 640 was spotted in service in May 2015.
  • 633 to WestCAT 806 in February 2016.
  • 635, 637, 638 & 644 to SLO RTA same numbers in December 2015.
  • 634, 636 & 641 were put up for auction on 12/13/2016.
    • 634 was bought by Frank's Star-Dust Tours, Inc. DBA The Bus.
    • 636 & 641 were bought by Transit Sales International/Complete Coach Works.
  • 646 was totaled in an accident on 2/26/2013 and was off of GGT property by 2014.

  • 822, 825, 829 & 845 were sold off in 1997.

  • 822 is owned by Loren Joplin.
  • 829 is in Williams, CA.
  • 844 to a private owner in 1992.
  • 852 was bought by Loren Joplin/Dreamliner Bus Leasing & Service with 804.[7]
  • 854 is preserved by a private owner.

  • 870 is preserved by the Seashore Trolley Museum.

  • 895 became a mobile science lab known as the BioBus in New York, NY.
  • 922 sold to Alaska in January 1992.

  • 1002 was bought by Buy-A-Bus in North Highlands, CA in April 1997. It was eventually sold to a private owner converted into a RV. It was spotted in the Bay Area on 1/1/2015.[8]

  • Retired in 2003.
  • 1108 was bought by Jeff Davis (Diamond West) in Enumclaw, WA. It was used as a shuttle at the Seattle Boat Show until 2006. It was sold off to a private owner in 2012.
  • 1124 to Party Lounge as Future Lounge 8902 in Orange County, CA.[9]
  • 1145 was the original "Whale Bus;" seen for sale on craigslist.
  • 1146 is being converted into an RV by a private owner.
  • 1111, 1139 & 6 other units to Million Air Express (MAX).
  • 1171, 1175 & 1180 to Reno for freeway commute service.
  • Some units to Manhattanville College.
  • 1107 was retrofitted with a Detroit Diesel Series 50 in the mid-1990's.
  • 1158 was retrofitted with a Detroit Diesel 6L71TA & Allison V731 powertrain.
  • 1136 to SMART T3389.

  • 50 units were rehabbed & repowered with Detroit Diesel Series 50 EGR's in 2003.
  • 1181, 1192, 1195, 1225, 1226, 1228, 1231, 1234, 1238, 1239, 1241, 1242 & 1243 were put up for auction on 12/3/2014.
  • 1193, 1204, 1216, 1218, 1223, 1227 & 1240 were put up for auction on 12/13/2016.
  • 1213 remains on GGT property as of 2016.
  • 1198 & possibly other units were bought by Amador Stage Lines.
  • Many units were leased, bought by dealers and private owners; see the series page.

  • Most units were used on Marin Transit routes starting in 2013.
  • 1251, 1262 & 1264 transferred to Marin Transit (same numbers) in fall 2013.
  • 1261 was painted into the Larkspur Ferry Shuttle scheme in 2014 and was mainly used on route 25.

    • 1 unit was converted into an RV was sold on ebay on 4/24/2015 in Arizona.[10]

  • 1401 was a former Flxible demo.
  • Retired in 2003 & 2010.
  • 1402-1404, 1406, 1408, 1410-1413, 1415-1416, 1418-1420, 1422, 1425-1426, 1429-1431, 1433, 1436, 1439-1441 to CARTA same numbers in 2007.
  • The remaining units were auctioned off in 2010-2011.
    • 1401 was bought by a private owner and is preserved.
    • All other units were bought by scrap yards.
