The North American Bus Industries 40-LFW is a 40 foot low floor transit bus. The first order of was placed by Valley Metro for the cities of Phoenix and Tempe in 1998. After purchasing NABI, New Flyer announced they would replace their product line with their own. The last 40-LFW buses built were for Houston Metro and Dallas DART.
Design
The 40-LFW has a low floor front section with steps up to a high floor section before the rear wheels. It was available in two- or one-door configurations and with a choice of wide or narrow doors. A wheelchair ramp could be specified at the front or rear door.
The 40-LFW uses a carbon steel structure that is phosphate coated to protect from corrosion. Wheel housings, stairwells, main electrical compartment and battery compartment are stainless steel. Body panels are either aluminum or fibreglass. An option for an SAE 304 stainless steel structure was introduced in 2011.
When launched, the 40-LFW shared its body styling with the high floor 416. A headlight revision in 2002 had optional round LED turn signals in lieu of the rectangular incandescent bulb signals that wrapped around the corner.
NABI introduced the redesigned 40-LFW in 2008, with the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) as the launch customer. A sleek, curved front replaced the angular front of the original design. The rectangular headlights were replaced with recessed, round headlights in a bezel that followed the curvature of the A-pillar. The rear of the bus remained largely the same. The same year, NABI produced a diesel-electric hybrid version of the 40-LFW for the RTC and Broward County Transit.
Another redesign, dubbed the LFW Gen III, was introduced in 2011. It is available with a two-piece or optional single-piece windshield with integrated destination sign area. The position of the headlights is similar to that on the NABI BRT series, but with different bezels. A centre panel has a chamfered cut-out under the windshield. The roof enclosures on hybrid and natural gas models have sloping ends with recessed accents and vents along the sides. Features that were introduced with the Gen III included all-electric cooling, all-electric HVAC, LED headlights, and composite sub floor.
