The Gillig Phantom was a transit bus available in the United States and built in Hayward, California. With the exception of a small number of buses built in a thee-year joint venture with Neoplan from 1977 to 1979, the Phantom was Gillig's first transit bus. The Gillig Phantom was discontinued in September 2008 in favor of its Low Floor product line, with the final order being placed that year by Sound Transit.

After the joint venturing with Neoplan ended, Gillig designed their own bus. Initially launched in a 35-foot length and 96-inch width, Gillig targeted small private operators and transit agencies and was able to compete with the popular RTS, the Orion V and other high-floor buses that were available at the same time. Lengths of 30 feet and 40 feet were soon offered, in addition to a 102-inch width three years into production.

As an alternative to diesel, the Phantom was made available with natural gas engines in 1992. In 1996, Gillig built their first diesel-electric hybrid bus. It used a series hybrid configuration. Gillig would later offer a parallel hybrid system from Allison.

The exterior of the Phantom would change little over the course of production. 1981 to 1983 models had a different HVAC hood along with rectangular tail lights. Most Phantoms were built with dual headlights while some, in particular for Foothill Transit, had single headlights.

A school bus version of the Phantom was produced from 1986 to 1993.
