History

Edmonton Transit System came into existence on April 29, 1947 after being renamed from Edmonton Transportation System. From 1976-1993, the system was referred to simply as Edmonton Transit. On November 14, 2016, the system was renamed to Edmonton Transit Service. It was originally founded in 1908 as the Edmonton Radial Railway.

Preservation

  • ETS preserves a large fleet of historic vehicles. The oldest is a 1932 Leyland Cub, and the newest is a 2013 El Dorado Passport cutaway. It is rumored that at least one Siemens-DüWag U2 light rail vehicle will be preserved as well. The historic fleet includes:
    • 4 operable and restored trolleybuses
    • 5 operable but unrestored trolleybuses
    • 12 operational conventional buses
    • 3 operational cutaway buses
    • 2 parts buses
    • One tow truck

Fares

Transfers are available and are valid for 90 minutes on any route, except 560, 561, 562, 580, and 747.

As of February 1, 2019.

Edmonton Light Rail Transit

The City of Edmonton is served by two light rail lines, the first of which opened on April 22, 1978. A third line began construction in 2016 and is expected to open in 2021. Called the Valley Line, the project is being delivered as a Public-Private Partnership. TransEd Partners was selected to design, build and operate the line.
