Bombardier
Bombardier is a Canadian aerospace and railway producer. The company has 66,000 employees at sites across the globe with headquarters in Montreal, Quebec.
History
Joseph-Armand Bombardier, a young mechanic in rural Quebec, produced a vehicle that could travel across the local snow-covered terrain. He launched the seven-passenger B7 snowmobile in 1937. He founded L’Auto-Neige Bombardier Limitée in 1942 to manufacture his 12-passenger B12 snowmobile. He later grew the business by introducing a number of different vehicles that accomplished different tasks. In 1959, he introduced the Ski-Doo, a personal snowmobile that became tremendously popular.[1]
In 1970, Bombardier acquired Lohnerwerke of Vienna, Austria, whose product line included trams. Four years later, the Commission de transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal awarded Bombardier the contract to manufacture 423 new cars for the Montréal Métro.[1] Bombardier would eventually be awarded contracts from New York, Boston, and Toronto.
In the latter half of the 2010s, Bombardier experienced financial difficulties. Some of their projects had also experienced high-profile troubles. New streetcars for Toronto encountered a number of production delays and quality control issues. New York had similar troubles with their R179 subway cars. In August 2017, it was announced that Bombardier was excluded from bidding on the R211[2]
Alstom announced in February 2020 that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bombardier and the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ) regarding the acquisition of Bombardier Transportation.[3] On January 29, 2021, Alstom announced the completion of the acquisition of Bombardier Transportation.[4] Bombardier rail vehicles still in production at the time of acquisition continue to be produced by Alstom.
