Highlights from the October 2023 Transit Executive Committee Meeting

Whitby, Ontario – On October 4, members of the Durham Region Transit Executive Committee (TEC) met to discuss various Durham Region Transit (DRT) initiatives and updates. Details and highlights include:

  • E-Mission Zero – Approval to negotiate an agreement with PowerON for Durham Region Transit's electrification infrastructure: DRT proposed a strategy to deliver and manage the infrastructure and energy assets required to support the transit fleet electrification plan. DRT will pursue a framework with PowerOn for engineering, procurement and construction of the electrification infrastructure and management, operations and maintenance of the infrastructure and systems. You can access the full report here.
  • DRT rebranding strategy: Durham Region Transit is planning to initiate a rebranding strategy, to position DRT as a modern, sustainable and inclusive regional transit service for travel within Durham and across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. This exercise will engage customers, residents, and staff to present a fresh and engaging image of the transit system. Staff will investigate and propose an appropriate strategy and required budget in a subsequent report.
  • Expansion of stations, terminals and creation of transit hubs: As DRT and public transit expands across Durham Region, new transit infrastructure will be essential to maximize operational efficiencies and meet customer expectations of a convenient and integrated transit network. DRT has developed the 2023 Stations, Terminals, and Hubs Strategy to guide the expansion of terminals, and develop stations and create transit hubs. Transit hubs will provide convenient integrated on-street transfer points for On Demand and conventional vehicles to use at the same time.

It looks like at least 5-6 Glaval cutaways are retired and for sale on Facebook, which seem to be the ones that the Promasters replaced:
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1343667646254338/

Fleet numbers I could make out from the listing photos are 8871, 8878, 8880

EDIT: The listing is not accurate and is likely not legitimate as they were sold on GovDeals

Pretty sure that's a scam. They were on Govdeals not long ago. They are all pictured at the Oshawa Garage. Pretty sure all the Glavals are retired.

Durham Region Transit 5103-5105 have also appeared for sale on GovDeals.

Is the region transitioning to having Voyago purchase and maintain the whole Specialized and On-demand fleet? The three minibuses up for grabs right now are all 2020 models, which is not that old even for a minibus.

Almost 5 years old. All built in 2019. Hopefully these do get a second life. Thought they would be sold off to Voyago.

I haven't followed up about the OnDemand service in almost a while but surprising...

The fleet looked decent but it's hard to explain why they're being sold off at a younger age...

Anyhoo, I really wished that DRT should expand their OnDemand service - to run all the time (not just during peak/rush hours)...just my thought..

The on-demand service does run at most times of the day when scheduled buses are not operating. Are you talking about the peak period GO connections?

Not those, but those that has outside rush hour GO connections (something in the same nature like Uber or Lyft).

Route 499 - Amazon Shuttle launched this weekend.

Quote

Beginning November 25, 2023, a temporary route will operate in the area of Conlin Road and Garrard Road on Saturdays and Sundays. Service on Route 499 will operate both ways between North Campus Terminal and Taunton Road and Garrard Road during busy periods of the day. On Demand will not operate to/from Conlin Road and Garrard Road when Route 499 is operating.

You can find the news release here.

And the schedule here.

Jan 2nd changes.

921 by far is gonna be fun. Scarboro Ctr to Harmony, express from Brock and Kingston Rd to Oshawa.

Moving the remaining Whitby routes (excluding the 302) to peaks only (OnDemand off peak, really guys?) is definitely A choice they made. Also while we're at it, consolidating three of the Pickering routes into one route is not going to go over well, nor are the cuts to route 222 and 224 (becoming the 227). Also what is the point of cutting eastbound trips on route 502, which has struggling for ridership after it lost the other Bowmanville route.

What's interesting is that route 605 is back, meaning that local buses return to Uxbridge.

This is not a good set of changes (cuts) and will go over like a lead balloon for passengers. They're clearly following the York Region example of "less transit off peak is better". You see how well THAT turned out.

"so that service can be reallocated to busier routes"

Taking the page right out of the MiWay playbook I see. Just shuffling buses around.

I don't use DRT, but a loss of service along Ravenscroft and Church and the waterfront in Ajax seems... unfortunate. There appear to be enough gaps in the system already. No real north-south routes in Pickering. but no real east-west routes either. The north-south corridors Cochrane, Garden, and Anderson in Whitby also lack dedicated routes. Was it always like this?
