The only time they had 3 car trains was during Pan-AM and that was only 1 train set out of 5.

'Cuz all the Pan-Am volunteers were joyriding the trains for free ;)

(Yeah, I know a few who did it...)

I found this from the transit group on Facebook. Here is the link:

The Union Pearson Express is getting desperate and offering a free ticket when one ride is purchased to hopefully attract more people to use the service.

Here is a link to a report mentioned in a Toronto Star article about GO and UPX fares and updates. The ridership is indeed trending upwards. http://www.metrolinx.com/en/docs/pdf/board_agenda/20151203/20151203_BoardMtg_UP_Express_Report_EN.pdf

Headline: "Letting Via riders transfer to UPX trains at Weston 'not feasible'" - www.thestar.com/news/gta/transportation/2016/02/04/letting-via-riders-transfer-to-upx-trains-at-weston-not-feasible.html

The issue seems to be fitting in GO, UPEx, and Via onto three tracks, and current timetables would result in (sometimes) four trains wanting to stop simultaneously. Given that it all works now, the fourth train must be a VIA one... so why not tweak VIA's schedule by a minute or two to remove the problem?

Because it is impossible to reliably have that VIA train arrive a minute or two later. There is simply too much variability on the VIA runs to expect them to always arrive at a particular time.

When they build the fourth track along the Weston Sub, I suspect that this whole discussion will become moot.

Maybe solve the need to walk 700m from Malton GO to the Miway 7 service, rather than push people to ride past the airport and back again. But anything to make UPX look like it has a future I guess...

Yes when they would have had more paying passengers this weekend too.

I assume that moving the ridership numbers up somewhat from "dire" to "dismal" is currently much more important than making a minor dent in the massive operating deficit UPX is running.

Well, that and attempting to preserve the logic that it's a lack of exposure rather than the lack of "money is no object" riders that's at the heart of the UPX's problems.

Well, 10,000 passengers rode the UP Express yesterday according to Metrolinx.

At one point, the line stretched all the way to the VIA concourse. I basically continued on to the Auto Show.

I hope people with proof they were catching a flight got priority. This is why I think segments heading away from Pearson (and northbound from Weston) should get first shot at cheaper fares to ensure airport travellers don't think "we're gonna be waiting two or three trains to get on"

Edit: I am hearing there is a separate line for those flying and for airport workers

Due to long waiting time, UP Express also offered shuttle bus service using go buses. It is free and it goes stright from Union to Pearson.

2494 and 2584 is few of them out on that special route

Fare at Weston and Bloor should match the Kitchener line for good sakes. I hope what The Globe and Mail is reporting is true. I don't think we'll ever see it at the price of a TTC Token that TTCRiders keep pushing for but it really needs to be integrated with a TTC fare. $5 from Weston plus a TTC token is too much to get decent service. If they are at the same price, they can finally get rid of the two different types of presto machines at Weston and Bloor and would hopefully put an end to tapping the wrong machine (which is pretty hard to do anyways). It's actually annoying that the GO platforms have been shifted further from the street to put the UPX platform there. I'm glad that fairer fares are coming.

This is clearly a fast-moving story right now. Today's Star story says Union->Pearson fares will be reduced to $12 cash, $9 Presto, and Bloor/Weston fares reduced to match GO, $4.71 for one stop, $5.02 for two.

With the formal announcement this afternoon at 2, we'll find out the final numbers soon.

Anyone want to bet that this is the beginning of a gradual process of folding UPX into GO Transit?
